Flying into Venice from PDX and then on to the Dolomites. We want to travel by train. What route do you recommend that is fairly direct? Thanks.
Take a train to Verona, change to another train towards Brenner Pass (Brennero). Get off in Bolzano/Bolzen and take a bus to Castelrotto.
Just as Lee says – you’ll be in Bolzano/Bozen in 2,5 to 3.5 hours depending on the train you catch.
When you arrive in Bolzano, exit the train station and turn right and walk along the footpath for about 100 meters walking past the waiting area for cars/taxis until you get to the bus stop.
You need bus #170, they come about every half hour buy your ticket from the driver, Scroll down this page till you get to the timetable you want
If you are going directly from the airport to Castelrotto, you will need to get to Venezia Mestre train station. The bus is 8 euro per person, so a taxi may be in order depending how many people you have.
Ann,
I have a few comments to add.....
In the same situation, I'd probably take the Venice Airport Shuttle to Piazzale Roma. When you arrive there, walk to the nearby Venezia Santa Lucia station, and buy a ticket from there to Bolzano / Bozen either from a Kiosk or staffed ticket window. As the others mentioned, this will probably involve a change at Verona Porta Nuova.
When you arrive at Bolzano, walk out the front door of the station and locate the Bus station. The method that Baz mentioned is the easiest, but you can also depart from the Bus station which is a bit of a walk from the rail station.
Thanks for your help. My plan is to spend 2 or 3 nights in Venice before heading to the Dolomites.
