Venice to Cortona

Good evening We are flying into Venice and then going right down to Cortona via train. Is it better to go to Florence and then switch to Cortona or go to Arezzo and then train from there? We will be arriving early am and hope to get into Cortona within 4-5 hours. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

One train every hour from Venice Mestre with a change in Florence. 4 hour trip.

Not sure why you fly to VCE to go straight to Cortona. It would have made more sense to fly to Florence or even Rome.
Nevertheless, whatever the reasons this is how you do it. Take a bus from VCE airport to Venezia Mestre station. From there you take a train to Camucia-Cortona. You will change trains at Firenze (Florence) SMN station (Santa Maria Novella). The first leg from Mestre to Florence you will be on a high speed Freccia train. From Florence to Cortona you will be on a slower Regionale Veloce train. Travel time is about 3.5 hrs or more, depending on the wait in Florence when you switch trains.

thank you both for your replies. Robert, the ticket price was the reason we flew into Venice and we have been to Rome multiple times and just wanted to see more of the Northeast section. Again, thank you.

marie, One other point to mention. When you arrive at Camucia-Cortona station, it may be a bit of an "adventure" getting up the hill to the town. There may or may not be a place to buy a ticket for the Bus. When I was there last year, I was told that the driver may pick up passengers at the station, but will then stop at the nearest Tabacchi so those without tickets can buy them. The other passengers on the Bus (those who have tickets) have to wait while this is taking place. Getting back to the station is considerably easier, since there's a convenient Tabacchi just down from Piazza Garibaldi (which is where the Bus stop is). I was very fortunate and was offered a ride up the hill (but that's another story). Happy travels!
