My husband wants to travel to some World War I trenches which remain in Cortina,Italy. We will be in Venice for a few days, hope to spend 1 or 2 nights in the Dolomite region and see the trenches, then move on to the Cinque Terra. All the transportation options seem to take eat up a lot of time. My question is two fold. Has anyone been to these trenches? Are they and the Dolomites worth the time expended in a first time two week trip to Italy? If so, what is the best way to manage the transportation?
Anyone have any input on this topic?
Nope.
To me the Dolomites are worth at least a couple of nights if not more. Did not go to the WWI trenches so I cannot offer any opinions although that would be of interest to me. I would recommend you rent a car when you leave Venice, maybe in Mestre, and drive the Great Dolomite Road driving the route from Venice to Cortina and on to Bolzano which is a route suggested in Rick's Italy book. The Dolomites are beautiful and there are several places to stop for the night along the way. You could turn in your car in Bolzano and take a train on to Cinque Terre or keep the car and turn it in somewhere on the way or close to C.T. You won't need a car there. With a car in the Dolomites you can stop often for photos. It would also be worth a visit to the museum in Bolzano where Otzi the ice man is located.
