Venice to Cinque Terre (Vernazza) by train

Have tried to research this and get confused by all the options. Can someone please tell me the best and easiest route from Venice to Vernazza by train? Is it best to go through Genoa or Milan? How far in advance to buy tickets? Thanks.

I guess I wouldn't question Genoa or Milan, when it will likely be both. Rather, should it be the northern or southern route. Northern route is through Milan, then Genoa then on to the CT; Problem is the train from Genoa to the CT is SSLLOOWW. The southern route may hit Bologna, Florence, Pisa, basically winding up at La Spezia for a relatively short trip into the CT from there. Both routes take about the same time, with the southern route maybe being shorter most of the time. Compare on Trenitalia and take the best option.

Consider the southern route with a couple of days in Florence, which will be well worth it, then on to Vernazza through La Spezia. Not a bad ride and the scenery is beautiful. Also, look at rail pass for this vs individual tickets.

Kent is correct. There is no easy way to get to Vernazza from Venice. The CT is a bit out of the way and it's an effort to get there. Expect 7-8 hours and 2-4 train changes depending on which run you choose.

CLICK HERE to see typical runs listed on Trenitalia. Some runs go through Milan, Others go through Florence. About the same time either way.
