Venice to Cinque Terre Train: Best Scenic Route: Through Milan or Florence

Hi all,

Three of us are taking the train from Venice to Cinque Terre. There appear to be two options relatively same amount of time. Route 1 north though Milan, Route 2 south through Florence. My question is, are one of these more scenic than the other? Looking for the prettiest route to sit back and enjoy the train ride.

We took the Venice to Milan to CT route this May. The reason for this route was because we were staying in Monterosso, and the Intercity train went directly from Milano Centrale to Monterosso. As I recall, coming down from Florence was more convenient for the CT villages south of Monterosso, and also included a train change. I would focus on the route that is the most direct to your home base CT village.

They will be much of a muchness. Go for the faster, more direct, easier choice.

Going all the way across the country is a long slog.

The one with the fewest train changes, that way you can fall asleep without waking up too often and forget about the view.
The Florence route will be a combination of flat boring plains or long never ending tunnels.
The Milan route will have more of the former.
