Venice to Bologna stop over?

We are traveling from Venice to Bologna this summer in June and are thinking we would stop somewhere along the way, spend a few hours and then continue on and arrive in Bologna in the afternoon. We are traveling via train. We also have 2 kids ages 7 and 17. Thanks

Ravenna, Padova, Ferrara, Vicenza. I think Ravenna would be my first choice though for the mosaics.

Assuming you are travelling by car, I'd stop in the Po Delta area. It is a low-lying plain, much of it below sea level with dykes, that is very unique in vegetation and the small villages scattered around the delta. It is a very tranquil area, there are some interesting short (15-40min) trails in the middle of the fields and along channels. If you are not into nature setting and just want a city, you can stop at Rovigo.

I also suggest Ravenna or Padova (Padua) - beautiful Byzantine churches in Ravenna and St. Anthony's Church in Padova with relics of the saint.

Agree that Ravenna is great, however you're travelling by train. We did that trip in March and to get to Ravenna you hvae to change trains in Ferrara or Bologna so it's not a good stop. Can't help you on any other town but you need to look for some place that's on the same train line from Venice to Bologna to make this work.

If you're traveling by train I'd get to Bologna and then side trip to Ravenna. If you have any interest in mosaics it's a must see. I also like Ferrara - I spent a couple of nights there as a base for visiting Ravenna, then took a quick look at Venice on the way to Ljubljana to decide if I needed to go back (I did!).
