Venice to Baveno, Italy

I will be traveling from Venice to Baveno. I am wondering what is of interest between these two cities that might be worthy of a few hours to visit. Never been to Baveno, any suggestions what to do there for an afternoon and evening?
We will travel to Switzerland via the Simplon pass, any suggestions for an interesting location to stop for lunch?

Verona is right on the way to Baveno from Venice and is full of interesting things to see including a largely complete Roman amphitheater, medieval fortifications, and several very nice piazze. The place is full of great restaurants as well.

There is not a great deal 'to do' in Baveno, which is one of the nice things about the place. It's quiet, relaxed and beautiful. But it is close to Stresa where one can take ferries all over Lago Maggiore, including the gardens on Isola Bella. There are numerous hiking trails and a cable car to the top of the mountain overlooking the lake and the town.
