2. from Sorrento to Rome airport?
Spending a few days up and down amalfi but basing myself in Sorrento with a friend and only have 2 days

I followed a very similar itinerary! My mom and I took an overnight train from Venice to Naples, then a train to Salerno. After Amalfi, we took the bus back to Salerno and made our way to Rome by train.

Trenitalia runs only one direct high speed train, it departs from Venezia S. Lucia at 15:25 and arrives at Salerno at 21:24. Of course there are many more trains if you are willing to change.

Check the sites of both competing railway companies (trenitalia.com/tcom-en and italotreno.it/en): given the time needed to reach Venice airport, a train could actually take less.

I agree with Dario, check the amount of travel time between flying and taking the train.

It's not clear to me whether you plan to base yourself in one town along the Amalfi coast and explore from there, or if you plan to work your way across, perhaps staying in Salerno first night, Amalfi or Positano the second night and Sorrento the third night. My response presumes you plan to work your way across.

As others have pointed out, you have 2 options to go from Venice to Salerno, fly to Naples (cannot fly to Salerno) or take the train. EasyJet flies nonstop in about an hour while Alitalia flights take about 3 hours due to a change in Rome. Naturally time getting to and from the airports must also be factored in. The high-speed trains take 6-7 hours, but they take you door-to-door. If you fly to Naples, there’s a bus from the airport to Salerno – takes about an hour.

Going from Sorrento to Rome, take either the Circumvesuviana or Campania Express to Naples and then a high-speed train to Rome. Ferry from Sorrento to Naples is another option for the first leg of the trip, but you would need to take a taxi or bus from the ferry terminal to the train station. I've always taken the local train, but a lot of people comment favorably about the ferry.

Helene

I could not find commercial flights to Salerno. ? I think if you want to fly, you may have to go to Naples, work your way across the AC and take train from Salerno to Rome

To answer your last question, you can take the local train ( Circumvesuviano) from Sorrento to Naples and then transfer to train to Rome ( see sites noted in prior post) The other choices are a bus service or taxi/private driver, to get from Sorrento to Naples

Your post is a bit vague, ( 3 days or 3 nights?) but it looks like you are really rushing across long distances for a short time on the AC.

"....then to Rome where i depart back to US). " Are you planning to travel from Sorrento to Rome and get your US flight the same day? As most US bound flights depart Rome in the AM, it would be very dangerous to cut your timing that close.

Dependent on your lodging location in Venice.

Train...

Vaporetto to station 45-1hr.
Arrive 30 min early if you need to purchase tickets.
Edit. Dario per vaporetto timetable, San Marco-S.Lucia
Line 1, 45 min. Lido, 1 hour.

Train Venice-Naples. 6+ hours
Most have 1 change.

Alibus-train station. 15 min.
Edit: Dario, I was thinking (NAP)

Train-Salerno. 38 min

Total time 7H43m

Air...

Alilaguna to airport. 1H08m

15 min walk into terminal.

Arrive 1 1/2hours before flight.

Easyjet. VCE-NAP. 1H10m.

Bus NAP-Salerno. 65 min.

Total time 4H08m.

Cost for the two will be pretty close.

I've done both, my preference is flight.

Frank gave you travel Sorrento-Rome

Ok
Based on input, I probably need to visit fewer places 😀
Two more questions-
1. Venice to Sorrento.-Quickest way? Fly from Venice to Naples, then train down to Sorrento? Or train from Venice to Sorrento?… Not sure if that even exists,
2. Naples airport to Sorrento… What is the fastest way? Should I take a bus from Naples airport to Sorrento? Or Naples airport to the wharf and catch a ferry to Sorrento? Thank you

Have you considered visiting Cinque Terre instead of the Amalfi Coast? What month of the year is this trip? Are you mainly interested in beaches, hiking, or what?

From Naples airport (NAP) take the Curreri Viaggi bus to Sorrento. 10 euros 1 hour 20 min.

Sorrento is a much better transportation hub.

Just curious why you are going to Sorrento at all? Amalfi coast is breathtaking...Sorrento is not. It is just a safer place for tourists to stay than Naples, so they think, in order to ferry to islands, Positano and see archeological sites...but that's it. Since you will have stayed on AC and need to get to Rome, why aren't you passing through Naples? Just 1.5 hours or less to Rome via high speed train from Naples.

As a Venice to Salerno bullet train takes 6 hours I really doubt that a Venice to Naples one would take 6+. Italo's direct trains do it in 5 hours and 5 minutes, Trenitalia's schedules will be similar.

Most trains from Venice to Naples do not need a change and the great part of Venice is 15 minutes far from S. Lucia station on a Vaporetto, not 45 or 1 hour. In one hour you could walk from one side of Venice to the other, twice.

Sorry, but I don't understand the "Alibus-train station. 15 min." line, either. Trains coming from Venice and those headed to both Salerno and Sorrento call at the same station, Napoli Centrale. Some use the underground level, but you don't need to take a bus to get there: an escalator is enough.

Quickest way from Naples airport to Sorrento would be a taxi. If price is a factor, I would use the Curreri bus which costs 10 euros and takes about 1 1/2 hours. It will leave you at the Sorrento Rail station. We used Monetti taxi, although not for the airport transfer, and they were wonderful. Monetti taxi does do airport transfers in that area.

Hi again, Helene,

I've deleted my previous post with the many questions and am posting the background info you sent me via private message. This will give the nice folks who've responded above a helpful picture of what you're trying to do, OK? :O)

You are in Venice for business and have 3 days for sightseeing on your own. You want to use those for the Amalfi Coast. You are traveling light: just a backpack.

You intend to leave Venice Monday, July 17th around 12:00, and fly out of Rome on Thursday at 2:00 pm.

Your "thoughts were to fly into Naples and train down to sorrento ...then visit positano for a day...then back to sorrento for a night and head to Rome Wednesday night ...Airbnb it near Vatican and fly out Thursday at 2pm.

Given this schedule, it'll take you pretty much all afternoon to get to Sorrento on Monday. You'd have two nights hotel (Monday in Sorrento and Tuesday in Positano) and only one FULL day (Tuesday) and good chunk of another to sightsee. Personally, I think this is a lot of time in transport for a very short time in the Sorrentine/Amalfi. It's not impossible but with just a couple of days, I'd recommend choosing a location between Venice and Rome instead to maximize your "fun" time and eliminate backtracking north to Rome.

It's unclear to me if you've been to either Rome or Venice before, and/or if you've allowed sightseeing time in Venice while you're there?

Anyway, let's see that the others say but as far as staying in Rome, I think I'd choose a location near Termini for quickest in-and-out on Wed/Thursday unless you were planning on seeing some of the Vatican early Thursday AM.
