Venice to Amalfi Coast- Stop in Orviteo?

I am trying to decide whether to take the train all the way from Venice to Positano or to stopover in Orvieto. We would love to stay somewhere nice and maybe do some wine tasting, but having a hard time find places in Orvieto. Please help!

Dan, are you having a "hard time" finding a Hotel in Orvieto? Which locations have you checked so far, and what time of year will you be travelling there? I stayed at Hotel Corso on my last visit and would certainly recommend them.

One other point to note, I don't believe you can "take the train from Venice to Positano". When you arrive in Naples, you'll transfer to the Circumvesuviana (commuter) train and then I believe the trip to Positano is by Bus (or take the Bus from Naples?). Hopefully one of the transportation experts here can confirm that.

Good luck and happy travels!

NO train goes to Positano!!! The trains go to Naples or Salerno, I prefer the direct train to Salerno--short walk to ferry and then ferry to Positano.

Dan,
We are doing the same trip this summer but are flying from Venice to Naples then have arranged other transportation from there (busses or private driving services are available). The flight is just over an hour and we found AirOne tickets for 105 euros. Consider this if you don't want to spend a day on the train.

we are traveling from venice to positano in june. we decided to take two days to make the drive and will be stopping in polvano in tuscany, as we want to show our daughters some small town life along the way. my husband and i have driven from one end of italy to the other on several occasions, and we always enjoy the stops along the way. i don't know your budget, but hotel palazzo piccolomini in the center of orvieto is nice. if you are a "foodie", we loved la chiusa in montefellonico near montepulciano. it is a family run hotel and excellent restaurant (about 60 km nw of orvieto). good luck!
