Hi, our family will coming from Venice in August and want to do a relatively easy 3 mile or so hike each day in alps. Would love to find a place to stay with views of the alps...looking for a good place to soak in the cooler air and scenery for a few days. What town would you recommend we stay? Also any favorite hikes? We've heard Adolf Munkel Trail is great. I know there are many areas of the alp region, would like to see the snow capped peaks while there. Thanks!
If you want the Italian Alps from Venice, I would stop in Bolzano. There is a gondola going up to Oberbozen which is lovely hikeable upland west of town, with a small railway line running across it that you can take to go back to the gondola if you wish. Also local buses can take you into the Dolomites to the east - Particularly to Castelrotto that Rick visits on his tours. There is a local bus there to take you to the gondola up to the Alpe Suisi that was featured on his Alps program. Or take a bus to Ortisei and explore both south of town (another gondola) to another part of the Alps Susi, or a gondola on the north side of the valley to the Col Raiser area. There are a number of Cicerone guides to hiking in the Dolomites.
If you want the Austrian Alps head for Innsbruck. There are lots of hikes in the valleys south of town easily accessible by buses that leave from the train station. German hikes around the Zugspitze can be reached from Garmish-Partenkirchen or Mittenwald.
Useful website:
At the bottom right of the main page you can change the language to English. The website has changed a lot in the last two years, and I have not investigated it fully recently.
Have fun.
By all means, rent a car to take in any mountainous area. The Dolomites are north of Venice, and we entered them from the north at Cortina d'Ambrezzo. That area has ski and walking trails that go from village to village.
On another trip, we came over The Alps via the Grossglockner High Alpine Highway which is north of Lientz, Austria and the Italian border. It's the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Going south, we came by Udine, Italy which is maybe 45 minutes north of Venice.
We're returning to the area 6/2022, and I'm thinking about staying in Innsbruck and doing day trips out of there into the mountains.
thank you so much!! Really appreciate the input and sharing your experiences
