Venice to Airport Early Morning

What’s the best way to get to Venice Marco Polo airport for a 7 am flight? We’ll be flying from Venice to Rome to connect to our flight back to the US so ideally we would be at the airport around 5 am. My main concern is what will be running at that hour. Is any option more reliable so early in the morning?

What time is your flight back to US?

I’d take a fast train from Venice to Rome the day/evening before departure from Rome.

Yes, there are vaporettos that run all night, and the first bus from Piazzale Roma is at 4:35 am M-S, 5:40 am Sundays and holidays. There are always expensive water taxis. But many choose to move their lodging to an airport hotel for the last night.

The lesson to be learned is that those very early flights out of European airports just go to large Gateway airports where you're going to sit around until midday when all the North American flights leave.

We refuse to accept any outgoing flights in Europe before 8:30 a.m. I'm not about to get up at 3:00 a.m. and virtually travel without sleep. The journey home is difficult enough on its own.

hey hey barretoa18
we have always got a private water taxi for about 100E. booked thru website motoscafivenezia.it
booked ahead of time, and met us as close to hotel/apt on canal. many say more expensive but it was only us on boat, got to airport early, and sacrificed on something. if i'm spending that much for my vacation it was all so worth it. how many are traveling?
one time we stayed at hotel titian near marco polo airport for cheap 79E, not nowdays 159E. the price you pay is more than private water taxi.
check train (trenitalia.com, italo.com or trainline.co.uk) will take about 4 hours then cost of hotel in rome will be more than water taxi.
what time does your flight leave from rome?
so many different ways to get to airport at different costs, it's your decision

I have used Motoscavi private water taxi multiple times and it worked out great. The picked us up at the dock nearest to our hotel on the little side canal and took us straight to the airport dock. It costs about 100 Euro but well worth it. I prefer spending the night on the island way more than airport hotels.

Thanks for the recommendation of motoscafivenezia.it. Looks like 140€ for that time. We’re 4 people and I think it could be worth it to end our trip in Venice proper rather than at an airport hotel. My biggest concern is reliability of service at that hour. Most reviews are positive so hopefully that bodes well.

lots of people, especially Americans, choose to fly out of Venice on early flights... the companies have seen it all before and are used to it.

In future you might hear advice to fly INTO Venice and OUT of another city such as Milan or Rome. It just means flipping the trip around...

But in your circumstances, if that's what you want, it should work.

Or you could get to P,Le Roma by night vaporetto or walking, then the bus which takes just a few minutes. And is very cheap. It is always your choice...

Venice water taxis are very reliable in my experience, especially if you book it through your hotel. Hotels are their bread and butter, so they are unlikely to forget them.

As Sam said above, the bus is quite reliable as well. Depends on where you are staying in Venice. It was an easy walk from our hotel to Piazzale Roma and we did that 4:35 bus. It's quick and drops you right in front of the terminal.

Thanks for the advice. Good to know there are good options so early.

We were dependent on a water taxi and had a scare when they were worried that the tide might be low for the water taxi to get us. We did get out but never will depart from Venice by air early in the morning again.

Thanks to everyone for all your good advice! Ended up booking a hotel close enough to the Piazzale Roma so that we could walk there and take the bus to the airport to catch our flight. It's a longer walk to the main sites but will be worth it in the end.

One thought. - verify you get on the proper bus. Last time there I did not pay close attention, and mistakenly got us on the Treviso bus. Simply stopped reading with the word Aeroporto. I realized something was wrong when it made the turns to stop in Mestre, and I heard the word "Treviso". I knew the bus to Marco Polo did not do this, and we had flown from Treviso on our previous trip. Fortunately I was able to quick get us off at Mestre and we were allowed on the next bus to Marco Polo from Mestre. Had I slept through this a bit longer we would have missed our flight home, we could never have gotten to Marco Polo on time.

Thanks for that. Would definitely not want to go to the wrong airport.

Is the VCE-FCO-USA all one ticket? If not, have you built in enough time at FCO between flights? That is a subject for greater concern than about the reliability of a water taxi at 4AM
