Venice Tickets

We will be on the Rick Steves 17 day Italy trip next month with a stop in Venice. Since St Marks and the Doges Palace are not included in the tour do I need to buy tickets ahead of time or just get them when we arrive?

If you can be at the top of the belltower on the hour you'll get a great view PLUS be right there when the huge bells are ringing...quite spectacular!

I was on an RS MyTrip and we did not buy any tickets ahead of time. Be sure to ride the elevator to the top of the Bell Tower on Piazza San Marco. We went early in the AM and it was not crowded.
The views are amazing..........

We managed to be up in the Campanile when the bells started ringing (through no trying on our part...just luck). I have a great video and was def a highlight...especially because I noticed the bells start swinging...others didn't, so the surprised looks were priceless...we did Doge's twice...the first time, we stood in line a good 60+ min...the second trip we got smart and bought one of the museum passes and bypassed the line. There was a trick with going to the Correr museum (interesting in its own right) nearby and getting the pass there...someone will chime in, I hope, with the bypass the line trick...
