Venice Sunday and Monday

Arriving in Venice Saturday evening. Have 2 full days (Sunday and Monday) and leaving Tuesday for Castellina in Chianti. I believe Rialto Market from what I see is closed on Sunday and Mondays which I'm disappointed about. Perhaps we can get to it prior to leaving on Tuesday. So far, I would like to go to Murano, Burano and Torcello on Monday and then a nice dinner (I'm thinking that's a full day there). On Sunday (our first full day) I figured we would take in Venice, walk around, go to St. Mark's Square, possible gondola ridge, get lost like everyone recommends and then do our own Chicchetti crawl. My concern is whether the fact that we will be there on a Sunday and Monday is going to interfere with any of the above?

If your hotel is near Rialto...say the Pensione Guerrato, there's no possible way you could MISS the market. You've not devoted enough time to Venice. Don't waste your time in Murano, Burano and Torcello. Those destinations are best visited AFTER you've exhausted your sightseeing in Venice.

Hi Helene,
We were also leaving Venice after two days of Rialto being closed so as you suggested, we got up earlier and went to the market in the morning Tuesday before checking out of our apt. near Rialto. We bought delicious little woodland strawberries to eat on the train. Check to see if the Doge's Palace is open on Sunday, it's right next to St. Mark's Square. Be sure to ride the vaporetti at night time too, great views of Palazzos with their chandeliers all lit up. Have a great trip.

I love Burano and Torcello, Murano not so much. Your original plan will leave you some strolling time your first night as well. You are smart to plan on getting lost!

I hope to have strolling time the first night but we will see. We are just flying into Milan that day. I almost cut out Murano as it seems most people had your opinion about it. Might omit that to have time for other things.

Tim is correct about you not having enough time to really do Venice justice. Murano, Burano and Torcello are really neat places and excellent day trips, but save those for another trip. With only two full days you will barely scratch the surface of Venice.

Thank you, but I'm not really a real touristy type where I need to see every monument, church, not so much into history. More interested in experiencing how people live and landscape and that's why I chose what I chose. Also love food. Could you be more specific on why I should stay in Venice and not wander off as far as what I should see there and then I can figure out if it's for me?

Helene, I am with you on visiting the other islands. Torcello is the site of the oldest settlement in Venezia, and has a couple of beautiful churches with mosaics. Burano is known for the many pastel colors of its buildings; it is a great place to see artisans and craftspeople in their studios, much more variety in glass work than on the other islands. Both are a little further away than Murano and so they don't get quite as much tourist traffic.

One day on the vaporetto can get you to lots of places. I hope you do have a chance to wander on the backstreets of Venezia.

Thank you Zoe for that. I was getting concerned. We will most definitely have a chance to walk the back streets.

I also love Burano and the boat ride there was lovely. Had time to wander around there and had a nice lunch and still had time for dinner in Venice. If you are an early riser I would get up and watch the sunrise in Venice. Lots of people will be there for the sunset, but you will have the city almost to yourself at the sunrise... along with the people who live and work there! Sounds like that is a little more of what you are looking for.
