Venice- staying near train station

I am not looking to primarily stay in this area but if I end having too, is it a hassle getting over to San Marco?

I don't mind walking and plan on exploring the city but at nights after dinner are the water taxi's still running late so I dont ahve to walk all the way back?

"...so I dont ahve to walk all the way back?" walking and exploring the hidden alleys and canals if half the fun of Venice. Now if you were staying in St. Elena and attempting to walk back to the train station...that might be a tiring walk.

Hi Conor, I stayed in the Dorsodoro area at Hotel Tivoli in October 2009 a 5 min walk from San Toma vaporetto stop. Lovely, quiet area with away from hustle and bustle of San Marco, yet an easy 10 min walk to centre of action. I clocked the walk to the train station at 5 minutes carrying one bag and an umbrella in the pouring rain. Lots of bars, restaurants and shops in the immediate area of the hotel. Have a fun time in Venice - it's magic after dark.

Yes the vaporetti still run at night. Distance between San Marco and the station is very walkable but I understand what you mean about being tired out after a day of sightseeing. Vaporetto tickets are expensive though. Someone suggested staying in Dorsoduro - that's a much nicer district than the area around train station.

We stayed at the Albergo Marin - less than a 5 min walk from the train station. Strolling to the San Marco area took less than a half hour and we weren't hurrying at all. It was a very well marked, pleasant walk. I was glad that we chose to stay near the train station - I like finding my room as soon as I get into a city to dump my bags. There were plenty of good restuarants and shops in this area too - it really felt no different than being in the San Marco area....but as stated above, I believe the water taxis run late, so either way it shouldnt be a problem for you.
