venice - sienna - "heart of tuscany" - rome: April 2023

hello. im planing my second trip to italy for April of 2023. planning on doing the following and would ask for recommendations or suggestions please.

  1. fly into Venice and stay three nights (airbnb)
  2. take train to Siena and stay 2 nights (hotel)
  3. rent car in siena and do the rick steves "heart of tuscany" using montepulciano as my home base (airbnb)
  4. stay in montepulciano for 3 nights and do day trips to monticello, pienza and montalcino. hit some wineries of course.
  5. drive back to siena, drop off car, take train to rome
  6. stay in rome for 3 nights
  7. back to the usa

i am most concerned with renting the car and from the best place. after some first looks online renting from siena looks like the best place and minimally costs around $100/day. i dont think leaving the car in a lot outside of montepulciano is really a concern to me.
this year i did rick steves venice, florence, rome tour in early april and it was AMAZING. this year i want to do this on my own :)

thanks everyone
thomas

You could drop the car in Chiusi so no backtrack
Then train to Rome
( train from Siena to Rome probably changes in Florence)

Be careful of winery visits unless you have a designated driver

thanks christineH. absolutely agree with your statement about wineries. I will be with two other people actually.

Gotcha!
You might want to check with you Airbnb in Venice about check in time and if you can drop your luggage before that
Most every hotel will hold your bags early but Airbnbs not usually
