Venice shared watertaxi from airport to M.dell'orto or Guglie - reserve ahead or no?

We're a family of 4, so I'm balancing economy with the thrill of a lifetime approaching Venice by watertaxi (assuming the weather will be great when we arrive in May). I'm thinking of reserving a shuttle with Venicelink (27euros pp), but have read a few negative reviews so am slightly hesitant. And then I saw one or 2 posts saying there's no need to reserve ahead, because there are shared watertaxis waiting for passengers.

-Anyone know if the shared watertaxis are normally available during the day, and what they cost? Is there a set fare?
-Any recent experience with Venicelink, especially the shuttle?

Thx!

Wait a minute. With 4 people going from the the airport to Orto or Guglie, you should be able to get a private water taxi for about 115 EUR. Why would you want to pay the same amount to share it with someone else?

There will be water taxis at the airport dock waiting to take your business. You can buy a ticket at the water taxi desk in the airport.

hey linz
i'm with sam on this one. no need to share
take one with your family only. we used motoscafi.it. booked online and walked to area of taxi waiting for us. if you use them, print your ticket, have address and directions of hotel/apt, stop you wanting to go to, we paid 115E total.
it's a great way to arrive, have fun and enjoy your this magical place.

I'll add a third vote for just having a private water taxi.

We took a shared one (did not book ahead, just went to the booth in the airport). We had to wait until they had a full taxi of people (I think I recall 7 in ours). Since we traveled carry-on, the wait was likely for others to get their checked luggage and make their way to the booth.

With a family of 4, just grab your own water taxi and enjoy.

The water taxi into Venice was one of the absolute highlights of Venice for us........magical arriving into the city that way, views oh so clear, and magical experiencing Venice for the first time traveling by boat into the smaller canals (with warnings from the driver when we were standing for photos to duck as we approached low bridges).

Have a fabulous time!!

Thanks so much for your replies and reality check! I don't know why . . . but I had looked at motoscafi before and thought that the price of 115e was per person! Duhhhhh! I thought that was crazy, and now I realize my mistake - - too much micro-planning late at night. I will be booking our private water taxi through them now, and can't wait to experience the thrill of seeing Venice this way. Woohooo!

One question to add--is it worth it to take the water taxi TO the airport? My family will be taking the train to Venice and flying out from there. Thanks!

EDIT: see addendum below.

If you're taking the train to Venice to get the the airport, it's very easy to get off at Venezia Mestre station (before the last stop of Venezia Santa Lucia station), then take the bus right from there to the airport. It will be MUCH cheaper as well (€8 per person), and should be faster. Furthermore, while there is a thrill approaching Venice for the first time from the water, the "thrill" of approaching the airport from the water is, shall we say, not quite in the same league.

The bus is run by ATVO. On this link, look at the second line ("Venice Marco Polo Airport - Mestre railway station") and click the arrow to download a PDF with the current timetable. The current schedule is valid through May 17, 2019. Note that the small "f" for feriale ("work days") is Monday through Saturday, not Monday through Friday as we use it in the US. You can see the service is quite frequent.

I think maybe the side poster is arriving in Venice and staying a few days, then leaving from the airport.
It is up to them how they want to get to the airport, and depends on where they are staying and how big the family is.

I agree with Harold, just take the bus to the airport. I was recently in Venice and I took it from Piazzale Roma, easy peasy and cheap. Have fun on your trip!

Thank Sam. I didn't catch that the question was from a side poster, and not the original poster.

Jrcorb: if you are indeed arriving in Venice by train, staying a day or more, then departing by plane, the "best" way to get to the airport depends on how many of you there are, where you are staying, and what time your flight is leaving.
