Venice, Secret Itineraries Tour, Time to train station

Hi everyone - I'm trying to plan my two (short) days in Venice and could use a little help with some travel times. My train out of Venice leaves at 4:20. At about what time should I be heading from my hotel, which is a couple blocks from St. Mark's, to the train station? I'd like to do the Doge's Palace Secret Itineraries tour at 9:55 that morning, and wondered if between that, lunch, collecting baggage from the hotel, if I'd be pushing it. The tour appears to be about 2 hours, which leaves a little over 4 before the train leaves, but it's my first time over there and I am not that familiar with train travel, time to and through stations, etc.

Also, should we book that tour before we leave the states, or can we book it in person the day before when we get into Venice?

Thanks! Just 30 days to my first trip to Europe.

Ask your Hotel to book the tour.Ours did and sent us a reservation number at no cost.Worked very well and we enjoyed the tour.If you go to your hotel and collect your luggage and then take the Vaporetto to the RR station you should have time to have lunch in the area of the station.

Last year, I caught the vaporetto at 7:25 a.m. near St. Marks to get to the train station for at 8:45 a.m. train. That was not enough time and we made it on the train with less than 1 minute to spare. I would allow at least an hour & a half to get from the St. Marks stop to the train station and make the train.

It depends on which vaporetto stop is near the hotel and which vaporettos stop there. If you are departing from San Marco-San Zaccaria and you are going to the Ferrovia stop (train station), the vaporetto says that it will take 40 minutes on the slowest No 1 vaporetto that stops at every stop. You can see what I see at www.actv.it. Again, the train stop is called Ferrovia. Note that if the No 2 stops at your stop, it's an express with fewer stops. This vaporetto only takes 18 minutes to get to the train station. I can be more specific if you can tell us the hotel or the specifi vaporetto stop.

I agree with the above that you should be walking out of your hotel with your luggage about 90 minutes before your train departs.

From St Marks square, if you take the Vaparetto to the train station it is about a 45 minute ride to the station. As you are walking around check out the schedule at the vaparetto stops. It will tell you the times. We also did the Secret Itineries. You can easily do both that day. Do you have train tickets for when you leave? If not, you can book it when you arrive. It is a very easy station to get around in and it is right there when you get off the vaparetto. Are you arriving by bus, plane, or train?

Our hotel is the Hotel a La Commedia, which apparently is right by the waterbus Rialto stop 1, in easy walking distance from that.

We are arriving by train as well, so at least we'll somewhat know the station for our return trip. We're taking the train to Bern, so we have reservations to Brig. Miss that train and it will costly and get us home very late.

Looking at the Venice map, you have a bit of a walk from your hotel to the Rialto stop. It's not really that close. From the Rialto stop, you are much closer to the Ferrovia stop than from San Marco as described in my post above. The vaporetto directions on the hotel website are a bit dated. It says to take the No 1 or No 82 water bus. The No 82 was changed to the No 2 some time ago. So it's either the No 1 (local) or the No 2 (express) to or from the Ferrovia stop. Given your distance from the hotel to the Rialto stop, I would still depart the hotel with my luggage about 90 minutes before your train departure. Of course, after you've made the trip to the hotel and understand the system, you will be the better judge of time.
