In a news release, the company that owns the Fondaco dei Tedeschi store has announced that they will not be renewing their lease next year. This is so sad…their rooftop area is such a nice way to see across all of Venice, and the people working there are so welcoming and kind. Apparently they will keep it open for the first part of 2025, but closing toward the end of the lease in September. Hopefully another lessee will be able to open the rooftop to visitors once again. We’re disappointed, as we will be visiting in September with friends who have never been to Venice, and the rooftop was going to be a little surprise for them.
Cathy, thx, we tried to go up two years ago, and were rained out. We will return next May, so hopefully will get a second- and perhaps final- chance. Thanks again for sharing!
You know, this does not surprise me. We went up on the terrace in October and I noticed the department store was very nice, upscale. But, there was hardly anyone there shopping and I remarked to my husband “I wonder how they stay in business” well, here’s my answer, they don’t. The view from the terrace was fantastic!
Was a wonderful space, but the leaser was one of that financial groups with the Great Super Expert about business that at the end completely miss the vision. How can you make money if you sell things that you can easily find in a similar shop near your house? When I travel abroad I like do shopping, but purchasing something I don't find at home. Something new, different and traditional. Why I should fill my luggage with same products I found at home? At the end they collected 100M€ of loss in the last 3 years.
BTW: the leaser and the owner are two different groups and the owner and the Townhall are just thinking how to keep the Fondaco opened next year. So, maybe will be saved the possibility to have that building opened and even the possibility to access the roof. At the moment nothing is known.
