Venice rules for behavior

Venice has several rules about public behavior that can get you fined. I can see the spirit of making the experience of being out and about in Venice more pleasant for everyone, but these fines could be unfortunate for someone unaware.

  • A ban on sitting down, for example on the steps in St Mark's square - potential fines of €200.
  • €450 for swimming or diving in the canals or any other waterway.
  • €200 for wearing swimwear or going topless - including men.
  • €50-€200 for feeding birds, or leaving, scattering and abandoning food waste.
  • €100 for using a bicycle - or even wheeling one while dismounted.

New ban considered: carrying alcohol after 7 PM, even if sealed in a shopping bag.

Practically all of these rules/fines have been in force for some time, including fines for purchasing knock-off goods (applies to other cities in Italy as well):

As far as potential fines for carrying alcohol, it sounds like it only applies to people who are already visibly intoxicated:

"..local police commander Marco Agostini, said he would not be targeting anyone leaving supermarkets having purchased alcohol. Instead, the proposed rules were for when "someone gets drunk and has a bag with three bottles of beer", he said."

Don't worry, you won't.

I can’t see the supermarkets being too amused about the “not carrying” after 7:00 PM. They sell alcohol up to closing time, 8:00 or later.
And if you can’t carry a bottle, what might be the plan for folks standing around the bars in Campo Margerita enjoying a drink at 11:00 PM.

How often do they ever apply the current fines? The world seems to be full of politicians announcing new rules that many ignore safe in the knowledge that they won't be caught and, if they are, then any punishment will be insignificant compared to the "headline-grabbing" figures announced.

I removed a side topic. For anyone that was involved in that, please avoid debating that subject on this forum in the future unless it relates directly to the OP. And even then... be respectful of others opinions. Thank you!

When we were in Venice recently in the evening, we sat on the steps in St. Mark's square. Other people were also sitting there. No one said anything and we enjoyed our gelato and people-watching.

As noted in the linked article, some of these fines are not in force yet and are set to be voted on in October. They may not pass and nothing will change.
