My sweetie and I like views from our room and/or our breakfast room. In Venice next July, we can afford either a room with a Grand Canal or other canal view, or a room without a good view, but a great outdoor breakfast terrace. This question has to do with how hot it is In Venice in July. I see it is in the 80s and 71% humidity. We love warm (we go to Florida most summers), but is the warmth conducive to lingering outside a lot on the terrace, or will we be glad we have an air-conditioned room from which to peer out? Or will we be out so much it does not matter about the room? Are there mosquitos in July? We are there for 3 nights, 2 whole days. I know this is personal preference, but I'd be interested in how others have made that choice. Thank you!
Since you asked... my choice would be a canal view. I like being able to look out a window and actually see where I am whether it's Venice, Paris, the Alps, etc. A breakfast terrace is too generic and for me, it would be too noisy in the morning and possibly too noisy at night if people are drinking wine and socializing.
The last time we were in Venice in July, the temps were in the 100s with 90+% humidity. I love Venice but it was horrible. Even the Venetians were miserable. Don't know what the weather will be like when you're there in July 2017, but what we experienced is not the norm. That said, AC and a canal view is my vote.. : )
Another vote for AC and a canal view. Canal view is the best part of Venice for me and I absolutely need AC there in the summer. Breakfast is a 20 minute deal for me so it's an easy call.
I love a view but I'd rather sit by the canal for breakfast since I would be out and about in the constant 'view' that is Venice during the day. Hard to imagine anything more luxurious than a leisurely breakfast on the water.
Jane, I think the choice is between a canal view from their room ( no breakfast there) and a breakfast terrace with NO water view.
I would be most concerned with where the sun is coming from. The outdoor terrace could be nice in shade, but beastly hot in the sun, unless there are umbrellas.
Thanks everyone! This is helping! More opinions welcome! Janet was correct, although my post may not have been clear. I was talking about a breakfast terrace with a view of the canal. I'm inclined toward the terrace too, as i don't think we will stay in our room a lot. The terraces I've seen seem to be in the shade....
Chances are you're going to spend MINIMAL time in a hotel room with or without a canal or bfast terrace. Save your money, get a decently located clean room and spend the extra to have a nice dinner or buy a Murano Chandelier or ride a gondola.
AC is not optional. You must have it.
The last time I was in Venice was in a June, and there were lots of mosquitoes. We didn't have air conditioning and so got quite a lot of bites in the room. So a definite yes on a room with air conditioning.
We book apartments in Venice, but I always get one with a rooftop terrace. I love sitting up there for the 6pm church bells all around. A canal-side terrace would work too, so that would be my vote!
Your post adding the info that the breakfast terrace is on a canal with a view changes my answer.. I think I'd opt for that but I'd still be concerned about noise from people on the terrace in the am and pm when I'm sleeping.
I'd much rather have a view than a chandelier! We were on a beautiful small canal and I was always looking out at it. I think the small canals are more picturesque than the Grand Canal. Check out the pictures on the Ca' San Trovaso website. It does have AC and a rooftop area.
I would choose the terrace with the canal view. It would be nice to sit there in the morning and in the evening. AC is important. I was there in July and it was hot and steamy.
Depending on your budget, this might be the place you are looking for:

In Dorsoduro near the Accademia (thus the Accademia vaporetto stop), has terrace out front along a side canal (even with it's own "dock" if you want to arrive by water taxi or gondola) and rooms with windows that open to canal views.
It was the MOST European feeling hotel I stayed in during my first trip to Italy a few years ago. Top notch service and attention, but the price tag did not reflect that.
I would not hesitate to stay here on any trip to Venice. Unfortunately, it's not available during my next visit.
Without knowing the hotel, I'd be wary of a room with a Grand Canal or other canal view. You may well end up with a view of a tiny side canal that isn't picturesque at all. Are you talking about rooms at the same hotel or are you choosing between two different hotels?
