We are planning a ten day trip in June . We are looking at beginning in Venice spending 4or 5 nights there then going to Rome and spending 4 or 5 nights there and flying home. My questions are is there any advantage to flying into Rome vs. Venice and reversing the trip? and what what be a fantastic day trip from Venice and or Rome. We love beach and wondered what can be done in a day that might give us a few hours of relaxtion somewhere near water? Thanks so much for any advice.
Both Venice and Rome have nearby beach towns. In Venice, it's the Lido - a quick vaporetto ride from St. Mark's. In Rome, it's Lido di Ostia - a little over an hour by train from Rome.
From Rome, I suggest Orvieto as a day trip. It's 90 minutes each way by train and Orvieto is a lovely little town. There are many interesting things to do there and I recommend the underground tour and perhaps a climb to the top of the Torre del Moro for a fantastic view of the area. The facade of the Duomo is stunningly beautiful especially when the sun illuminates it.
If you like Italian food, consider a day trip to Bologna.
