venice "open" on sunday?

I have the option of when to arrive in and leave Venice. 1. Arrive thursday early afternoon and have all Friday, all Saturday and leave sunday for travel to tuscany. 2. Arrive Friday 6pm and have all Saturday, all Sunday, and leave monday for travel to tuscany. Wondering whether shops, restaurants, museums, churches are open for visitors on sunday or do things kind of close down? Also did not know if having a weekday in venice would be better than having only two weekend days. thanks.

Things are general open on Sunday. It is Monday that is the problem. Many locations will be closed on Monday if they were open on Sunday. Sometimes those that were closed on Sunday will then be open on Monday. But Monday will likely have more closures than Sunday. So I would open for two and travel on Monday.

The other reason to avoid traveling on Sundays is the possibility of a strike, which usually starts Saturday evening and goes to Sunday evening.

I know people are always taking about strikes and warning about strikes, etc. Over the last 18 years and nearly a year of travel in Europe we have only encountered one train strike. That was in Madrid about 12 years ago and forced us to discover the excellent bus system in Spain. My personal opinion is that the probability of encountering a strike is extremely low. So it is close the last thing we ever consider.

Julie, you mention an interest in churches. Active churches will have notably reduced open hours on Sunday, since sightseeing is not typically allowed during Mass. (However, you certainly would be welcome at join the liturgy, provided you wanted to stay for the 1 to 1.5 hours... I've experienced sightseers chatting and then leaving in the middle of Mass, and it is so rude and so disruptive.)

Frank, thanks for the encouragement. I agree that we can't plan a trip around a possible strike. I am leaning toward spending friday and saturday in venice and leaving sunday.

Sherry, I didn't really think about attending a liturgy, but that's an idea if I am there on sunday. I am used to two hour services, so should not be a problem. I am glad to know that sightseeing is restricted that day, that helps me. thanks.

I wouldn't call it restricted. If there is a particular church you want to visit, you could do it on Saturday. That still leaves a lot of Venice to see on Sunday. If you want to take the Jewish Ghetto tour, you would have to do that on either Friday morning or Sunday. I think you'd be hard put to find things that are closed on Sunday in Italy. I had no problems in Venice visiting churches, but in Rome, many are closed for several hours at various times of the day on any given day - and I kept arriving during those hours!
