How hard is it to get from the "mainland" (I'm coming from Munich) to Venice?

By train ? Just stay on until it ends at Venice (don't get off at Venice Mestre)

Can't beat the first answer.

You want to leave the train at "Venezia Santa Lucia".

Note: I don't use the Italian spelling (just) to show off, but because that is what you should look for from the train window.

Venezia Santa Lucia is one of my favourite stations. It is a boring concrete building, it is what is outside that matters.
Normally when you exit a station, there is a road in front, full of buses, delivery vans and taxis.
In Venezia Santa Lucia, the "road" is the Grand Canal (Venice "Main Street"), and it is full of Vaporetto (water buses), delivery boats and water taxis.

And yes, you need to know the "real" name of any station, both for looking up train times and to make sure you get of at the correct station. An Italian searching for flights to "Nuova York" would not be very successful.
All trains heading to Venezia Santa Lucia stop first at Venezia Mestre (on the mainland). You don't want to get off there. You then cross a causeway to the islands.
