I'm trying to decide between paying about Euro 20 per night more to stay in Venice proper or to save some money and have more spacious accommodations by staying in the Lido area. Most trip advisor posts claim it's 30 min to Venice sights from Lido. I'll be traveling with my teen-aged niece. Any suggestions?
Are you staying multiple nights? We had a ball renting bikes on the Lido and running around with European vacationers! However, I absolutely LOVE Venice proper after dark. You might do a night on each, if you're willing to move a little more. Lido isn't worth more than about a day -- but you could also base there and do several of the islands.
Absolutely stay in Venice proper. The ferry from Lido is $$$$ (6E each way per person) and you will not be saving 20E a day when you include the fares.
Also you will want to stop by your hotel room/apartment in the middle of sightseeing to rest, drop stuff off, use the bathroom. You cant do this if you are staying in Lido.
we've booked accomodations for a week on the Lido ( that was all that was available through our timeshare exchange) Isn't there some kind of vaporetto pass that will take us back and forth for a set fee for the week?
Personally I'd pay the extra to stay in Venice proper. I know you are thinking of all the things you can spend that extra 20 Euros on but you will be taking a reasonable chunk of your time travelling each day and also I don't know how frequently the vaporettos run.
To Kate. You can get 1, 3 or 7 day ticket for the vaporetto. This is definately the way to go. It will save you heaps. It's also so much more convenient.
Thank you so much Helen.. I thought I had read that in Rick Steve's Guide to Venice ( a MUST read) so that's what we'll do.
