Venice - private tour?

Hi
Our family (2 adults, 2 kids - 10 and 12) will be traveling through Europe for 3 weeks this summer. We will be spending 2 full days in Venice and I'm wondering if it's worth doing a private tour (and if so, do you have recommendations) or just doing it on our own?
Thanks for any advice!

If you have 2 full days in Venice you could do it on your own.
1 day doing Venice (proper) wandering the streets, seeing churches, Piazza San Marco etc. and the second day you could go to at least 3 of the islands
(Murano, Burano, ??? (I enjoyed the cemetery island - lots of famous people buried there) The kids would probably enjoy the boat ride and wandering around Murano (Glass Blowers - shops etc.) and Burano ( the colorful houses, lace making, gelato.....)
If you like tours you could do the first day with a walking tour of Venice (including Gondola ride).
(I booked through Viator.com (a tour consolidator))
Happy Travels.

We were in Venice 2 days and I wish we had taken a tour. I love hearing and learning all the tidbits of places from a guide.

If you just must have a tour then you could always book the Secret Itineraries Tour of the Doge's Palace. You'll have a guide throughout the tour telling you all about the palace, the government, tidbits of Venice. Then spend the rest of your time on your own.

Definatly take a tour. These three are fun, informative and free ( donation to cultural society plus tip to guide). Think the kids will really like it.

Heather,

We took a Cicchetti Tour with Urban Adventures. They took us to several very old traditional chicchetti bars near Rialto. Chicchetti is traditionally a quick appetizer before dinner, but on a tour like this you can make a nice dinner out of it, and learn about the city and culture of Venice.

Of course, with a little work, you can find some bars of your own and put a tour together yourself, but our local guide did answer other questions we had, like where to go for her favorite gelato, and whether a local restaurant we wanted to go to was good (it turned out to be here favorite).

Have fun!
