Venice picnic

This may seem, an odd question.. but, can we picnic in Venice? In Rick's book he says yes , but somewhere I thought I saw one cannot picnic. I thought it was on Rick's TV show. We like to gather food from different sources and picnic, but wanted to check.

I don't know if it is forbidden to picnic in Venice, but I can't really imagine doing so. There aren't any parks that I saw, perhaps some squares or steps to buildings you could use -- but they are so congested with people during the day you would be overrun. Perhaps Rick knows a couple of out of the way places you could do this, but I never saw any. This would not be high on my list of things to do there.

Agree with Betty. I have just come back from Venice about 3 weeks ago and I didn't see anyone picnicing and there aren't a lot of places to do this either. If you really want to there is a small park at the vaporetto stop just up from the Palace at the San Marco stop. It's the only park area I saw when I was there.

There's a big market near the Rialto Bridge, where you can buy food. There are public benches, steps and stone walls to sit on while admiring the view, but don't expect to find a lawn to picnic on.

There are several piazzas where you can sit and have a picnic. Just make sure it's not the seating for a business as they might charge you.

It is frowned upon on the bridges since it is strickly a pedestrian city that would be inconsiderate and probably not too safe to be in the way.

Hi Jane:

Yes, you can have a wonderful picnic in Venice. There is a terrific green arean called La Biennale. There are lots of beautiful trees, peopel walking their dogs, playing games and you can sit and watch all the activity either on benches or the ground. You will have to ask which vap. to take, I can't remember but you can look at the maps in the vap. stops to check the route. You could also go over to the Lido. Have fun.

Somewhere is Ricks Italy book he states that technically it is illegal to picnic in Venice. I will inquire further in a few days when I arrive.
