Venice Pass and "toilet pass"

Hello everyone. I have never been to Venice and we are going with a friend who insists we need a "toilet pass". I am not sure what this even means. Are toilets that hard to come by there? Also is the Venice Pass a good thing to have or not. We will be there three days in September.
Thanks for your help and please be merciful.

Rather than pre-paying for public toilets as part of a Venice sightseeing pass, I prefer to either carry change to pay on the spot or even better, to make use of facilities in each museum and restaurant that I visit. If your hotel is conveniently located, you probably will stop back there to freshen up before dinner. You're more likely to get the full value out one of the smaller sightseeing offers, like the Museum Pass or the Correr/Doge's Palace combo ticket.

When in Venice I have never used a museum, toilet, or wi-fi pass, which I think are not very useful or cost effective. I have always used a vaporetto pass, which for your situation would be the 72-hour pass. This is especially a good deal if you will spend some time on the lagoon visiting Murano, Burano, etc. which I recommend (especially Burano). As for toilets, I agree you can generally find nice ones in museums and restaurants, and of course at your hotel. In addition, there are my two rules for Italy: (1) when in doubt, have a gelato; (2) when in need of a bathroom, order a gelato, ask to use the bathroom, then pick up your gelato on the way out.

We bought the toilet pass on our first trip. What a joke. The public restrooms were never where you needed one. As others have said, use museums, or buy a coffee and use the one in the cafe.

If this friend insists you need a WC pass, be sure to encourage him or her to 'go' at every chance they get. Otherwise, you may discover that you are spending lots of your vacation time searching for those elusive 'pass toilets' :-(

The public pay-as-you-go (literally) restroom at the train station in Sorrento in December 2012 was pretty unpleasant -- it's one thing to use a crummy restroom at a train or gas station or dive bar, and another to PAY for the privilege! Paying implies that some of that money will go to keep the place supplied and pleasant.

Anyway, unlike free restrooms in supermarkets, convenience stores, fast food places, etc. in the USA, Venice and Italy don't have them as readily available. One tiny bar in Venice let us use their tiny (smaller than on an airplane!) gabinetto. If you buy a drink or a snack, places should be happy to let you use their facilities. As noted above, if there's a toilet available, for free or for small change, "never pass up the opportunity."

Carrying some toilet paper or a pack of tissues may come in really handy, too, in case some place isn't well-supplied.

You will be surprised on how few and far apart the public toilets are in Venice. I used to be able to find a location map at VeniceConnected but they have really changed their website. There may not be one nearby when you need it. Typically, you pay about a 1.5Euro or slightly less to use the toilet. For this cost, you usually do get clean toilets.

I just used the facilities in museums, galleries, restaurants, cafes.
I never had to look far at all.
We talked about getting the pass - but decided against it and we were fine for our
4 days there.

Have never bought a toilet pass for Venice. Until I read this thread I wasn't even aware such a pass existed and have visited here 5x in the past 11 years with July 2013 the most recent visit. We never found bathrooms were a big issue even having our 2 elementary age boys with us for the earlier visits. We would just use the restrooms in restaurants, museums, etc. Have a wonderful trip and enjoy Venice!
