Venice + Padova questions

Hi !

Our trip is near and we are getting excited !

Quick summary :
Arrival july 8 in rome (5 nights)
July 13 Florence (and daytrip to Siena) (4 nights,)
July 17 Venice (3 nights)
july 20 flight back to Montreal

My wife have a friend who lives in Padova. They propose us that: Leave Florence around 8:30 (we already have our train ticket for Venice, so we would get out at Padova train station), they get us by car at train sataion around 10:30. We stay for 3 hours in center of Padova, get some quick bites. In the afternoon they take us to the Colli (???) and enjouy a good meal with nice view (they say), ans around 19:00 they get us back to train station so we can go in Venice. In the evening we take posession of our airbnb, and we will be too tired to do anything I guess....

In venice we have an Airbnb in cannaregio (near calle pistor, Anconeta bridge).

Questions:

1) What do you think of that plan ?

2) Is there many trains between Padova and Venice ?

3) With our Airbnb location would we need a vaporetto pass ?

4) Any good restaurants recommandation not too far from our lodging ?

With that plan i'm thinking we should have add a night in Venice and cut one from Florence, but it's too late. We cant add any day to our lodging in Venice (it's full) and remove a night from Florence would cost us money, so we will have to stick with it.

Big thanks !

I think it is doable. But it sounds like you maybe do not want to do this? It is your vacation and I don’t think you should be talked into dumping your pre-purchased ticket to Venice if your heart is not in it.

That said, it is certainly possible to do. There are many trains to choose from after 1900. Look at www.trenitalia.com.

We always get a vaporetto pass because we inevitably use them daily and the pass is cheap compared to a single ticket.

  1. Yeah, good plan.
  2. Yes, frequent regional trains in the evening. Hold out for a Regionale Veloce which skips most of the stops and gets to Sant Lucia station in 27 minutes. On a week night, 19:21, 20:00, 20:21, 20:51, 22:51. Slower trains at other times and cost is 4.25 EUR per person.
  3. Whether you want a pass or not is up to you, but from the train station it would be easiest to take the No 1 boat to San Marcuolo then an easy walk. Otherwise, about a 600 meter walk with just the Ponte Guglie to cross.
  4. Paradiso Perduto is in the neighborhood and often has live music. Its popular, a reservation is a good idea.

Our view is, anytime a local offers to show us around, we go.

We spent a week in Venice and a week in Padova last October. Padova is definitely worth a stop, especially if you have a local guide. The train service between the two cities is frequent and fast. I would get a vaporetto pass, it is convenient and cheaper than single tickets.

If by Colli, they mean the Colli Euganei, I would jump at the chance. We took a bus there one day, and did some hiking near the entrance to the forest, and it was one of our favorite days of the trip.

Padova is a lovely town with beautiful ancient city center. If I could live in a town in Europe for 6 months, it would be there. We stayed there for a week a few years ago, opting for that option because as a family of 4 we could not find adequate and affordable accommodations in Venice. It turned out for the best. Train to Venice quick, easy, safe. Enjoy it!
