Venice overnight

We are spending one day and night in Venice on Tuesday, June 28th. We are arriving sometime in the morning on the train from Bologna. Problem is that we fly out of San Marco the next morning at 7:20, so I guess we will need to stay at a hotel near the airport. What is the latest time in the day to get from Venice island to the mainland? Or should we just stay on the island for the one night? Searching the forum, I found this, does it all still apply? Yes, it's a crazy day, but one day in Venice is worth it to us! Plus, much cheaper to fly to Dubrovnik from there than anywhere in the area.

While the water taxi is way cool and will make you fell like James Bond, many people balk at the idea of spending the money.
It is possible to get to the airport early by using other cheaper means of transport.
Alilaguna Linea Blu leaves San Marco at 03:40 and arrive at the aiport at 05:00 for 13 euro per person.
The blue ATVO bus leaves Piazzale Roma at 05:00 and gets to the airport at 05:20 for 3 euro.
You could also arrange for a land taxi from P le Roma as well, although I don't know the cost.

The name of the VCE airport is Marco Polo. San Marco is the main piazza in the historical center.
The trains and buses to Mestre run until past Midnight, and taxis from Piazzale Roma are available 24/7.
In your shoes, instead of staying near the airport, I'd stay at a hotel in the historical center as close as possible to Piazzale Roma (there are several at different price ranges), so that early in the morning you can walk to Piazzale Roma and catch a taxi (regular taxi on wheels, not water taxi) to the airport. The taxi fare to the airport is a flat 40€ and might be a good bargain if it's 2 or 3 of you. From Piazzale Roma to the airport is only 20 min by taxi. It is sufficient to be at the airport at about 6am, since you are flying within Europe, albeit Croatia is not in the Schengen Zone.

I know you asked about hotels. But I think you get nothing from a Venice hotel if you have to leave that early. I would suggest that you give up a night in Bologna to have two in Venice. This itinerary was not well planned.

My first trip to Venice was an 8-hour day arranged by my employer, because he could adjust the plane flight (1987) at no cost. So I am well-prepared to say that one daylight day in Venice is worth a night in a soul-less airport hotel.

You have failed to say whether the flight is to another continent (requiring a 3-hour check in time), or just within the Shengen zone.

Thanks to you both. I did mean Marco Polo, I have no idea why I typed San Marco. Although I have been to Europe twice, I have never had Schengen Zone problems and since I have not read a lot about Croatia yet, I did not think of that. Appreciate the heads up. I did not even know of the taxi option, we will try that. Perhaps we will take a day from Bologna and area and go to Venice for two nights, but we have been to Venice before. Since we were flying from there, we decided to just squeeze something more meaningful from it besides being at a hotel.

Thank you again for your replies.

Oh yes yes yes - definitely give up a night in Bologna for an additional night in Venice! There's no other city as magical as Venice in the mornings and evenings.

OTOH, since you've been to Venice before, perhaps spending more time in Bologna makes more sense
