I would like any information - pros-cons - with regard to staying on the mainland in Mestre as opposed to staying in Venice proper - also we are considering renting a car for a day trip to the dolomites - any thoughts on that are appreciated as well -Thanks Ron

I highly recommend staying in Venice itself rather than Mestre. There is no comparison in the two cities. Even if you must cut costs in other areas, staying in Venice is worth it. Venice is magical in the evenings when the cruise crowds have departed.

This is such a recurring question on this site that it really should be its own FAQ. Ovewhelmingly, those who have stayed in Venice overnight recommend doing that to be able to experience Venice at its most magical.

Ron, I agree with the others - stay in Venice! It's only a short train ride to Mestre.
