We are planning a short trip to Italy for the holidays, and plan to visit just two cities: Venice and Florence.
Which of these two cities do you think is the better location to spend Christmas?
Thanks,

I would choose Florence only because of the flooding in Venice that time of the year. Last year, Venice experienced its worst flooding in two decades and 95% of the city was underwater at one point. Although not to that extent, Venice experiences extensive flooding each winter and it is getting worse as the years go on. So, you may get it when you visit, but at least you can enjoy Christmas without it.
Florence is great during Christmas - just a really nice feel to the city with the decorations, lights, etc. I don't think you would be disappointed.
I just returned from Italy and spent 5 nights in Venice and 3 nights in Florence. I would do Venice again in a heartbeat. Florence was great but Venice is superb!!! I don't know about the flooding but just get a pair of boots!!!
Don't do Venice. As per a previous poster, Venice flooded severely last December (the worst in decades), and a pair of boots would have done no good. The water in San Marco was waist deep. Most hotels, restaurants, and shops were flooded, so unless you are willing to experience that, then I suggest Florence is a much, much better choice.
Winter in Venice is supposed to be pretty brutal. Do Florence. Plus, since Florence is a much bigger city, you'll likely find more to do than in Venice in December.
One can never predict when Venice will flood, but I was in Venice in Dec 2007 and it was magical. It was not crowded at all which made it so much nicer to see the sights. I would do Venice again in December in a heart beat if budget allowed.
In December I would choose Florence. Having experienced both in December, I remember how brutally cold the wind off the sea felt in Venice. Even bundling up with gloves, caps, and coat it was still brrrrr....
Check out the Lufthansa 3-day specials. Great rates.
Have only been to Venice and Florence during warm weather but I would choose Florence and maybe even avoid Venice all together at this time of the year. Did you see any of the photos of the terrible flooding last Dec./winter in Venice?
