Venice opera attire

I am taking my thirteen year old son to the opera in Venice. We are sitting in the cheap seats. I have a nice black dress that packs easily so I'm set. But I'm debating what to pack for my son. He has a suit. My husband thinks we should take the suit. But hauling a suit all across Italy for one evening seems like a waste of suitcase space and weight. (We are flying carry on only and taking trains once we hit the ground in Italy)

Would khakis, a polo and the suit jacket be acceptable? Or do I just need to go ahead and pack the suit?

I would probably go with nice black slacks and a white banded collar shirt with black piping or other black detail - no jacket required. It is a nice dressy look without the jacket.

From my personal experience, dress as nice as you can. I don't think a suit for your son is necessary. The only people I recall getting really dressed up were young Italian couples who were definitely in "date night" mode.

We don't own that kind of shirt. The advantage of the khakis is that he could wear them on the plane so they would be useful for more than just the opera. He would be really uncomfortable in dress slacks on a long plane ride so they wouldn't work for that.

Thanks!

Does the website for the venue specify dress requirements??

Yes, thank you. I had seen the official dress code note on the website. I was looking more for what people actually wear/the unwritten expectations. (For example, there's certainly no rule about it, but I personally wouldn't wear a Dodgers baseball cap to a Giants game at AT&T park.)

I appreciate all the feedback.
