We stayed in Venice a few weeks ago in what was sort of a splurge stay (125E for their small double) at the Hotel Galleria. It was considered the one "budget hotel on the Grand Canal" and although small, the location was excellent. We overlooked the Academia Bridge from our room, and could walk to everything. Of course, one can walk to everything in Venice anyway, so it depends on how you want to spend your time. If you stay close to the train station and get a day pass on the vaparetto, you can hop on and off, and be close to departure when the time comes. So, research sites for Venice lodging, but just saying, we liked the place we stayed for a few nights.

Wow, that's a four hour trip each way (Rome-Venice) and at least $100 per person each way. Is there any way at all you can stay in Venice more than one night? I guarantee you you'll be kicking yourself otherwise once you get there.

Note that many places in Venice want a 2-night minimum but you might escape this restriction in September. We were able get one night at the Hotel Messner. It's in the RS book. We needed one night before the new Hilton Molino Stuckey opened where we stayed for a few days. The Hotel Messner has an annex down a separate small canal in back of their main hotel. Not large but very clean and quiet. We paid about 110E. We chuckled about the shower being slightly smaller than a telephone booth. Bend over to wash your legs and your backside is outside the shower. But it was clean. Breakfast was included. The Hotel Messner is about 400 feet from the large Santa Maria della Salute church in Dorsoduro.
