What to do? What to do? Our 4 nights soon in Venice will include New Years Eve and New Years Day. Dear Friend and I are traveling on a modest budget, so probably will not want to spring for the multiple-hour, multiple-course restaurant experience that many restaurants feature on New Years Eve. So, questions: Will we be able to find a meal - perhaps cicchetti? - in the early evening? Also, we hope to see the fireworks; do we need to book seats in San Marco Square, or just show up (what time?) - or do you experienced Venetians have suggestions for better places to watch the fireworks? Thank you so much! Oh --- and New Years Day --- will restaurants be open? I see that the Guggenheim will be open. Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thank you!
There will be plenty of places that can take you in before 9.
Just be ready for possible winter conditions at that time of the year. The video below is Venice this past weekend.
Oh my goodness! Well that might change a few things... like maybe no vaparetto voyage out to Murano and Burano this trip... and seriously warm clothes. Thanks for the warning!
The vaperetti are not open boats. They have cabins to keep you warm and dry.
But a vaporetto voyage through the stormy seas shown in the recent video might make the trip across the bay to Burano a challenging one for a landlubbing tourist who is a bit prone to seasickness...!
It wouldn't have been on the news if it wasn't rare.
Of course if you have the dock gyrating about like that you wouldn't go on the dock much less on the vaporetto. At least I wouldn't.
But in all the years I've been going there I've never seen it like that....
Those conditions happen only under Bora wind conditions, which generally occurs in winter.
The Bora wind is a gelid easterly wind coming from the Croatian Alps down to the Northern Adriatic. It can reach hurricane speeds.
Regardless of the Bora, the Northern Adriatic region may get very cold in winter, because the Eastern Alps are not very high and do not offer a lot of protection from the winds coming down from Siberia. So dress appropriately.
