We will be in Venice over May 1st 2014. What should we expect on Labor Day? Will everything be closed? Are there special events? Or are we just "up a canal without a paddle?" Please advise. Thanks!!!

A lot of tourist sites will still be open, and if not, the city itself is an attraction. Check out the book "24 Great Walks in Venice" and you will find charming tours you can do yourself even when sites are closed. Check with your hotel as the date comes nearer to see what they can tell you about openings. Also, most museum sites, even church sites, list national days they are closed. For example the Basilica di San Marco site makes it appear they are open on all holidays, and it looks like The Guggenheim is open too. Just research a bit using Google and you can find out what is and is not closed on any given holiday. Have fun!

Thanks so much Laurel! I will check out sites on Google and check with our hotel. We will figure out something and now I feel that a day will not e lost. Pat
