I am currently studying abroad in Florence and want to take my brother to Venice on December 21st on our way to Austria, but am wondering how it is this time of year? Are the shops and restaurants open? And are the vaperettos and gondolas still running? We are also thinking of doing New Year's in Rome. What is that like, what sort of celebrations/events do they have? Is it a good place to celebrate the New Year? We like fireworks and big New Year's gatherings/celebrations.
Venice is always worth a visit, and yes, restaurants and all public transport is running. Vienna might be a bit more lively on New Years Eve. Venice is pretty quiet and not given to loud parties (Carnival maybe?)
Rome hosts huge gatherings including fireworks at the Colosseo and Piazza del Popolo. Reserve a room NOW if you plan to be here for the holidays.
We were in Venice last year from Dec. 22-26 and most everything was open. I had thought I'd have to make our Christmas Eve and Christmas dinners in our rental but turned out there were many, many restaurants open. Vaparettos ran regularly and lots of gondolas about. We were able to do any touristy stuff with no restrictions and even attended a concert on Christmas night and an operetta on the 23rd.
Most street stalls were closed on 12/25 and 12/26, but that didn't affect much.
