I haven't been to Venice for about 5 years, but when we were there the last time there were some small bars near the Realto that had live music at night. Does anyone know of any such places to have a drink and listen to music?
They vary. 4 years ago I remember an American ex-pat blues singer was knockin'em dead in the streets behind San Marco. Paradiso Perduto in Canareggio often has live bands. Just keep your eyes and ears open when you get there.
There's music on Piazza San Marco in the evening - three different orchestras - but if you want to sit down and have a drink, you need to bring the big credit card.
Totally worth though - in my opinion.
Yes, having a sit down drink on Piazza San Marco in the evening can be expensive. But it is, in my opinion, one indulgence everyone should allow themselves at least once.
If you are there during the University school year, the Dorsoduro district of Venice can quite lively. Last October, the wife and I would wonder the streets over there just to take in all the lively action. The rest of Venice is blissfully quite, except for little pockets where locals live or hang out, mainly Cannaregio and Castello (I think) and, of course San Marco (where a glass of wine will run you 30 euro).
Last year there was one small bar that was open till basically sunset just 20 steps from the Rialto on the south side next to a pizza shop.
Paradiso Perduto in Cannaregio often has live music and it's very popular with locals. Make a reservation for dinner and make it an evening.
