Venice New Year's Eve Dinner Reservations

My daughter and I will be in Venice for New Year's Eve. I have been trying to make dinner reservation at someplace not touristy and have contacted 3 different restaurants in Rick's book over the past week or two, none of which has replied. Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice place to have dinner before the fireworks in St. Mark's? Preferably a smaller more quaint "local" place? We are staying just east of St. Mark's but have been looking at several areas north and west as far as Rialto.

Thanks!

Did you try anywhere in the Cannaregio area? We love the quiet back canals. Safe travels!

One of our favorite places in Venice is Trattoria Da Marco Valla Fava on Calle Stagneri which is in the Rialto Bridge area and has been around for decades. Don't know what their holiday schedule is, but you can go to their website or send an email to see if they will be open. Some of the best seafood ever.

TC, Thanks! Found them (I think—I found Ristorante Da Mario Alla Fava on Calle Dei Stagneri). Checked out their website and went to make a reservation on their little reservation widget. Sadly, it appears their last seating New Year's Eve is at 2pm. Still hoping to find someplace open and that will actually reply. I did get one reply out of 6 requests so far, only to say the place is closed Sunday and Monday. Maybe we will just end up doing a Venetian pub crawl for Cicchetti. But would surely like to treat my daughter to a nice dinner for New Year's.

Ken, You might want to try them for lunch (the food is just as great) and then do your crawl that evening. Another place to consider is a canal side restaurant . We generally avoid them as they are usually overpriced and under quality. There is an exception. Check out Trattoria Da Giorgia ai Greci. It is very close to San Marco on a back canal, and an easy walk to get away from the crowds. And if she is of a certain age, a sit down drink at one of the places on San Marco with an orchastra would be really neat. A bit pricey, but most places in Venice are.

I suspect that places that do not reasoned to requests are already fully booked. Not too surprising.

Where are you planning to be for the actual fireworks? Piazza San Marco, or elsewhere? As I understand it, entry into the piazza is limited and they cut it off at some point, before it becomes dangerously crowded. It might be better to plan to watch elsewhere, and thus have dinner somewhere away from San Marco itself.

I have read that the fireworks are set off from a pontoon anchored just off the island of San Giorgio. That means you should be able to see them from places in Dorsoduro and Giudecca as well; even from Lido as one blog recommends (but it is a distant view).

I can recommend a Dorsoduro restaurant where our family had a wonderful dinner last October; it is an easy walk from the south end of the Accademia Bridge:

Not to be confused with Taverna San Trovaso, which at one time was a “Rick’s rec” but apparently is no longer. That one is more casual, very touristy, and not as good. The Ristortante has a special menu for NYT but not a pricy set menu. You cannot reserve directly on the website but you can enter a request.

After dinner, wander out toward the tip of the peninsula, know as Punta del Dogana, and hopefully find a good spot from which to view the fireworks. If there is no room at the actual point, the sideway lining the south side of the Dorsoduro peninsula is wide and offers more viewing opportunities.

Grazie all! Ristorante San Trovaso worked—responded promptly and confirmed our reservation. That was the final piece of our puzzle. Thanks also for the tips on catching the fireworks.

Ciao.

Fabulous menu for Capodanno! Wonderful surprise to obtain a reservation too, plus it’s close to the Piazza.

Lola-the restaurant will go on our list for our spring visit in Venice. Thank you.
