Venice Neighborhoods - which is best for an Apt?

We will be staying in Venice for 3 nights in mid-May. What recommendations do you have for the best neighborhood to stay in to be central for sites and wandering?
Thanks

It really depends on what you want while in Venice. If you want crowds and mostly tourist, San Marco is likely a good choice. If you want quieter areas and real Venetians, Cannaregio is lovely. I spent a week in Cannaregio on my last trip and really enjoyed it. I have chosen Dorsoduro for the fall because I am interested in getting to know another area and it comes highly recommended. I'm pretty sure any of the areas would be wonderful. Venice is magical in all areas.

I try to pay attention to how close the apartment is from the nearest Vaporetto stop and how many bridges there are to cross......

I also spent a week in Cannaregio and liked the area. There was an elementary school a few doors down and I really enjoyed the feel of being in a residential neighbourhood. The nearest tourist shop was a couple of bridges away... but so were the restaurants and the nearest vaporetto stop.

Venice is very compact. Cannaregio and Dorsoduro are both great neighborhoods to stay in.
