Venice - need help with hotel, length of stay and restaurants

What is a clean but cheap place to stay in Venice with a private bathroom? I prefer to stay close to St. Marcos square.

Also, is one day enough in Venice or do you recommend more?

Finally, what are some of the better places to eat in Venice?

Thanks

You'll get better responses if you define "cheap" using Euros and if you share what it is that you like to do. Also, how much would you want to spend at a restaurant? (Be forewarned, Venice is not famous for its restaurants. There are some good ones, but not tons.)

Thanks for the feedback.

Definition of cheap - Ideally, I don't want to spend more than 100 euros per night.

For restaurants, I know a good restaurant costs money so I am ok spending money on good food.

Things I'd like to see - Rialto Bridge, St. Mark's, La Salute, Punta della Dogana and anything else you might recommend.

Thanks

We stayed at hotel Orion. Got 5% discount for paying in cash. Is listed in Ricks book and is only two blocks off St Mark square (very easy to find with Ricks directions. Also included is an excellent breakfast. Our room was very clean and roomy. Was nice to be close to the square for an early or late night walk. It cost us about 140€ which isn't cheap but then Venice is expensive. I'D say if you are walking and find a restaurant you better stop or keep good notes on how to get back there later. It is easy to get turned around. We spent only 40 hours in Venice and got a very good glimpse of the city and took in St Marks and Doge Palace.

Hi Faisal,

Finding a place under 100EUR will be tough if Venice. We stayed at the B&B Corte Campana (www.cortecampana.com) which is recommended in RS Italy book. It was 125EUR a night and included breakfast. It was very close to San Marco Square (5min Walk). Riccardo the owner is very helpful and accommodating. He was always willing to give suggestions on places to eat and things to see. He even invited us to a local bar with some of his friends to watch a soccer tournament. Very friendly guy. I would definitely go back there.

As for restaurants to eat, we went to Trattoria da Giorgio ai Greci (which is in RS book also) and it was one of the best places we ate in all of Italy. They have Canal side dining in a quiet area off a back canal. It was so great. Took a little while to find but well worth it.

In regards to time, I would recommend staying at least 2 nights. That's what we did and we only had enough time to really see Venice (didn't have lot of time to go to Murano or the other islands).

Have a great Trip! Venice is AMAZING! :-)

Denise/Marla - thank you so much. This is very helpful. I will plan two nights and you are right that it is hard to find anything under 100 euros. I did contact Ricardo at Corte Campana but they are sold out. I will look into Orion.
