Venice memory

Does anyone remember what the name of the department store is that has a rooftop lookout for sunset views?
thank you, Mary Anne James

Hello majsantacruz, and welcome to the forum, but sad news... it was T Fondaco dei Tedeschi - it has closed.

Sorry,

@hiredman, that is sad to hear. We've visited the rooftop and having walked through the store to get to the elevators, we much appreciated what a calm oasis it was from that bustling, crowded corner at the bridge. I am glad you posted this information as as were would have planned a stop to refresh at the lovely café in the centre on our upcoming visit. Not intending to book a rooftop visit we would not have known it is now closed.

Even though Fondaco dei Tedeschi is now closed, you don't have to give up and miss out on sunset views over the rooftops.

Venice actually has plenty of publicly accessible rooftop viewpoints (this article lists 7 of them). True, Fondaco was the only free one, but honestly, the hassle of booking a slot wasn't great anyway. San Giorgio's bell tower is the cheapest at 6 euro, but my most unforgettable sunset was from the panoramic terrace on top of Palazzo Pisani, the city’s music conservatory - which you can visit on a guided tour for 20 euros.

Yes, we attempted to get to the view twice. Once we didn't have a reservation and were turned away and the second time we had one but it had rained and they closed the platform. I never got to see the view so I can't say if it was worth the hassle but it was a hassle.

There are several good views with drinks - but unsurprisingly you'll pay for that experience.

I have heard that the sunset view from the Skyline Rooftop Bar is worth the 2-3x the price spritz if you're in the mood. I believe the hotel also has a shuttle boat specifically for the trip since it is on the edge of the city.

Looking to go in off season next year so I'll tuck these lists away for later reference.

Oh, the view from Fondaco was indeed great. I especially liked it after dark. Hopefully they’ll reopen the building and terrace soon, but with a smoother system for access.
