What I cropped out of the WSJ article I mentioned yesterday is that the mayor is talking about putting up turnstiles at the entry points to Piazza San Marco and charging admission during high season.
In return however, you would gain free access to public restrooms which currently charge a fee.
hmmm, I'm suspicious. politicians say a lot but seldom do very much. Turnstiles at Piazza San Marco? Bet they would be torn down before the first person tried to get through!
Frankly, I think his idea makes sense to sell off pieces of art that have no connection to Venice other than being in a Venetian museum. Apparently he's been floating this idea since October (no pun intended).
