Venice masquerade event in September?

Is there any sort of Masquerade event in Venice during the month of September? Were spending several days there and I cant seem to find anything.

The Carnival in Venice is in the Jan/Feb. time period. September has the Venice Regatta the first Sunday in Sept. where lots of colorful traditional boats parade down the Grand Canal, followed by different types of boat races. We found a spot along the Grand Canal and watched the Regatta for 2-3 hours. Part of the entertainment (for us, anyway) was watching all of the boats, ambulance boats, spectator boats, etc. try to maneuver down the Grand Canal afterwards!

Thank you for answering. Ya, aware the Carnival is first part of the year, was wondering if they do anything at all in September? Doesnt have to be the Carnival event, just any event that involves the masks/partying/shows/etc.. I see they sell masks all year, even have several masks shops, but no events at all? Seems weird that this is what Venice is known for throughout history and throughout the rest of the year other than that brief time at the beginning of the year, they do absolutely nothing?

No more odd than New Orleans and it's Mardi Gras, or Munich and Octoberfest ( which is mostly in Sept, not Oct), or Carnivale in Rio.

Hrmm..Maybe I am not explaining this correctly. I don’t expect Carnival to be year round, nor have I said that in the original post. They sell masks year round in Venice, but not a single event is related to it? No shows, no partys, events of any sort? This seems odd to me. I can go to New Orleans other times of the year when Mardi gras is NOT on, yet some places still keep that feel or celebrate alive in a similar fashion (People throw beads on bourbon street, some restaurants and bars celebrate in that fashion) year round. Quick search on the internet of “Mardi gras year round” will show several hits. Same for Oktoberfest as we were went to Hofbrahaus as its known for the Oktoberfest feel year round. Some of the examples actually prove my point in how odd this is that Venice has nothing.

That may be (I've been to NOLA) but if bead-throwing and whatnot is happening other than during Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday or during the several weeks immediately leading up to the solemn period of Lent, then it's a cheap dilution of culture and tradition that doesn't occur anywhere in the city but for drunk tourists on Bourbon Street. There's nothing authentic about it.

Sorry, that sounds harsh but that's the truth. Do some reading about the history of Mardi Gras not just in NOLA but in other locations where it's observed in the world. Same for Oktoberfest: it makes zero sense in July or March and silly to pretend that it does.

Do they sell masks year around in Venice? Yes. Mostly cheap, made-in-China ones for the tourists. Masks made by Venetian artisans can cost hundreds of dollars and take days to make. Carnavale? Has only existed in its present form since 1979 and largely for tourism purposes as well.

There are any number of annual events to enjoy in Venice: maybe look at what may be happening during your visit?

You say it doesn't have to be Carnevale, yet you keep referring to Mardi Gras (the last day of Carnevale).

It's not weird, it's respect for custom, tradition, history, and oh, "ya", its tie to a solemn religious event (Lent).

Oh, dear, how can anyone enjoy Venezia without a fake mini-Carnevale?

The 2017 Venice Biennale will be going on in September, link above will give you guidance, word on the street has it that events occur all over the city in connection with the Biennale. Don't know if they're masquerade events, but you might be surprised, it's Venice!

BTW, you can find little masked face souvenirs with glitter, fancy hats, colorful feathers, just beautiful, I transport or mail many of these to friends and family and they are loved!
