Venice Lodging Recommendations

Us and another couple will be in Venice for two days late May 2019. We would appreciate some recommendations for lodging. We will be coming from having been a week in the Lake Como area (and a 10-day cruise prior to that) and have one large suitcase plus a carryon each. We would prefer sharing a two-bedroom, two bath (with showers) apt. Thanks.

We stayed here two years ago. It's a 3/Bed 3/bath. Terrace on a canale. Slightly off the tourist tract but still writhin easy walks to everything. We paid less, but booked directly with them.

There were three of us so we each had our own room.

You say "two days.". Does that mean two nights? You may find that many apartments have a 3-night minimum.

hi duckvp22
does two days mean one night or two nights? may be best to rent hotel room near train station so you don't carry bags over bridges and stairs/steps. watch your arrival and departure times with checking in and out about storing luggage. some places may not, may have minimum stay for apartments, cash euros in arrival, no elevator/lift if you have mobility issues, how much is your nightly rate?
check cross-pollinate.com, booking.com and use the filters, ca-badoer-veniceflat.it has two studios. we stayed in the west studio, loved it and the area. you probably have to email them or send a booking form.
some places do not have 2 bathrooms and check what type of beds (double or twin), maybe B&B since you'll have the privacy. enjoy your trip, we've been three times.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Yes, it will be two evenings, probably Saturday and Sunday. We are trying to decide whether to stay near the train station or stay near the main attractions so that we can retreat to lodging for a quick respite if needed.

Venice is small and compact. There is no need to stay near the train station. Could you store your large suitcase somewhere and just take a few changes Of clothes in your carry on.?
The canals are crossed by bridges which have steps up and down. Or, better yet, book a hotel near a vaporetto dock.

I don't think I would bother with the hassles of an apartment for just 2 nights. In fact I know I would not.
We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Ala- it is just steps from the SM Giglio vaporetto stop- no stairs or bridges, walking distance to all the sights, close to San Marco but far enough away in a quiet square along a canal where the gondoliers line up.
Also has an American style bar where you could hang out together I guess.

In two visits to Venice, both times found our places thru http://www.vacanzeinfamiglia.it .

Click on the Italian flag in the upper right portion of the screen to switch to English. They started with just Venice, but now have places elsewhere in Italy, too.

Thanks Suki, Christine H and Cyn for your suggestions. One issue we discovered is that there is a big festival the Saturday and Sunday that we were planning to be there. So, now we have to decide whether or not to change our plans and come earlier to avoid the huge crowds or to keep our plans and hope that we can see the sites without long lines, etc.

It is possible to book a timed entry to St Mark's for a few euros.
We did that then the Secret Itinerary tour so we didn't wait in line for Doges Palace either.

Which festival? There is the Festa Della Sensa in mid-May and the Vogalonga rowing race two weeks later. I would give my eye teeth to see either one.

Since both are centered on the water, most people coming for the festival will be there, not visiting San Marco or other tourist sites. The city will be crowded and restaurants will be busier than usual, but do not avoid Venice because of that. Make dinner reservations and book a timed entry at San Marco. Go in time to see the illumination; it is usually around noon but the time may have changed.

hey duck
i agree totally with lola. stay and watch the festival, something you'll never see again and enjoy yourselves. if it's the ones lola mentions it's water theme with venetian rowing and traditions. find a place to get comfortable near the grand canal or any canal and watch them row by. have your camera ready
two years ago with a bad knee and mobility issues, i sat outside table at ristorante da nino, across train station over bridge on grand canal. my friends went roaming and met me back there. great views, you see everything and everyone, any kind of boat on the water, getting off trains, pushing/pulling luggage, people watch, having my prosecco and "best" tiramisu for couple hours, talking with an extended family for padova. great memories.
stay put, it will be crowded and always is but you're already there, have a fabulous time.
we were in venice a few years back and found out about the bardolino wine festival at lake garda, rented a car and room at hotel nettuno. it was fabulous. any festival you can attend go for it. check out italyheaven.co.uk, search festival and read up about it.

Hi, Duck. We were just in Venice last Monday (arrived the day of the crazy high tides) and stayed here: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/9706595. The place was located at the Arsenale stop on the #1 line, and the walk to the house was about 3 minutes, over one bridge and around the corner. The place is on a quiet canal two blocks from the Grand Canal and the neighborhood boasts a great pizzeria, bakery, butcher shop and greengrocer. The apartment is small, but there are two bedrooms (one queen bed, one king) and three bathrooms, air conditioning, plus a small, basic kitchen. Best of all, the hosts (Calliope and Massimo) will meet you at the vaparetto dock and walk you to the apartment to give you your orientation.

From the apartment, it's about a 3-minute walk (depending on how fast you are and how many tour groups are in the area) to St. Mark's Square. If I were to return to Venice, this is where I would stay.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your travels. Susan

Lola -- We will be there for the Volgalonga Rowing Race. Thank you Lola, Susan, Christine and Sriak 100 for the recommendations and advice. Princess Pupule, I like your spirit and attitude. I think that we have a pretty good feel for what is available and how to go about getting the most out of our two days and two nights. I appreciate all the comments.

We recently stayed at Hotel Sant'Antonin and it was wonderful.
It's not the fanciest place, but it is very nice and the staff were all amazingly friendly and helpful.
The breakfast was good with lots of choices to suit different tastes.
