Venice Lodging

Could anyone who has traveled to Venice recommend specific lodging? Also please include the location....I would prefer to be in the old town area of Venice within walking distance of sights, restaurants, etc.
Thanks!

Ca’Angeli is in San Polo, not far from the Rialto Bridge, and the breakfast room overlooks the Grand Canal.

I liked locanda Casa quirini. It’s close to San Marco but on a quiet small square.

As long as you are on the main island of Venice (NOT the mainland, like mestre or airport area, not a smaller island like Burano) you will be within walking distance of the main things you want. Look at a map - the main island is fish shaped, grand canal thru the middle.

Another vote for Hotel Flora! We spent a week there in early September. As Alan mentioned, a room overlooking the lovely courtyard was our preference as well. Many benefits with this location: Five minute walk from Vaporetto stop, short walk to San Marco attractions and restaurants. The hotel is well appointed, quiet, immaculate and has a delicious breakfast. Weather permitting, you can enjoy eating in the courtyard. The 24 hr staff are very accommodating as well.

Have stayed at Pensione Guerrato in the Rialto Market area a number of times and have always been pleased. If you do book there, let us know as we can give specific directions for a short cut that will save a bit of walking with the luggage. And Venice itself is small enough one can walk just about anywhere.

I liked Pensione Guerrato too, but not for people who don't want to climb stairs. The lobby is one floor above the street, and rooms are a floor above that. Some Rick Steves tours go through there so you may meet lots of other Americans. The rooms are larger than you usually find in Europe. While the windows are double-glazed, street noise can be a problem on the south (toward Rialto Bridge) side, so try to get a room on the opposite side. Very well located in the heart of the city, next to the fish market and a couple of blocks from Rialto Bridge.

Betty, how many people in your group? I can recommend a great apartment in a superb location, but it has 3 bedrooms so may be too large for what you need.

...area of Venice within walking distance of sights, restaurants, etc.

all of Venice is walkable, really and truly, so you might consider staying in the neighborhood in which you would like to begin and end your days.

We absolutely loved Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo. It is a couple of minutes walk from the San Stae vaporetto stop. The room we were in had everything you would want in a hotel room. We measured every other hotel based on this one! It is charming; the breakfast area is a lovely courtyard; the staff is always ready to help, and there are an abundance of nearby restaurants, cafes and Campos nearby.

we stayed in a very nice VRBO in Venice. It was called the Ca’ ella Studio, a small family-appartment which located on the ground floor in an area of the historic center of Venice, behind the Arsenale and Piazza San Marco.

It was a perfect location, but there were only 2 of us. It was a one bedroom apartment.

We stayed in Dorsoduro at Locanda San Barnaba. Here is a link: http://www.locanda-sanbarnaba.com/en/. It is located close to the Ca'Rezzonico vaporetto stop and within walking distance of everything wonderful in Venice. This is a lovely locanda with an excellent staff and large, very clean rooms. It is also located down the calle from Campo San Barnaba, which is a very nice place to have an aperitivo in the evening. Also, an excellent restaurant is located there, Ristoteca Oniga.

If you are familiar with the Katherine Hepburn/Rossano Brazzi movie Summertime, it is the campo where she fell into the canal and where Brazzi's character's shop is located. Campo Margherita, another wonderful place to enjoy a light lunch or dinner and/or aperitivo, is a short walk away.

Enjoy your planning and your trip.

I would stay in Dordoduoro or Cannaregio neighborhoods, away from San Marco. We stayed st Hotel Flora once, lovely hotel except for it’s location near San Marco with it’s crowds.
Venice itself is old town.

Why stay east of San Marco?

Sorry I was a bit short. If you stay east of San Marco you avoid (most of) the day tourist crowds which wander from the Train Station (Ferrovia) or the Bus Station to San Marco.

You can also stay north of San Marco - it's just that I like to stay near the water and near Via Giuseppe Garibaldi.
