Try booking.com and laterooms.com It is pretty late to book for mid-May so go with anything reasonably priced and reasonably rated. The booking.com ratings are usually pretty accurate - I think only people who have booked through them are invited to review and are limited to the hotel they used.
We loved our B&B it has an AMAZING view of the Grand Canal. Locanda Ai Santi Apostoli. We are going back this summer. Just for the view from the breakfast area I would go back a zillion times.

We stayed at La Chicca B&B last year, and were quite pleased. It's located in Dorsoduro, roughly between the Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim. Didn't check their availability for your dates, but here's their website...
We stayed at the Hotel Riva, a B&B recommended in RS Italy, and it was great! The proprietors were wonderful, and the breakfasts were good. Our room was charming, and the building is right on a canal very close to St. Mark's Square. The price was good, but be sure you ask for a room with air conditioning, because they don't all have it! Our friends got a gorgeous room with incredible views of two canals, and lovely light fixtures, but it was July and no AC or breeze made it difficult for them to sleep. We had a less ornate room, but were really grateful for the AC!
Have fun!

Have you looked at Locanda Orseolo? It's the #1 rated B&B on Trip Advisor and for good reason. It's located 5 minutes from St. Mark's Square and 10 minutes from the Rialto Bridge and it's on the Orseolo Canal. We had a lovely room overlooking the canal. Since it's highly rated, it books fast but you might just luck out and be able to reserve a room for the dates you need. If you're lucky enough to secure a reservation, you won't be disappointed! The B&B and staff are amazing. Have a great trip.
try my favorite: hotel ala (book directly through their web site, not great western, for the best deals. enjoy!
When availability is tight, the "old-fashioned way" is to send out brief, specific email requests to five or six hotels at one time, generally using Rick's book listings, and hope for one to reply.
We stayed at Locanda Orseolo last October, and had a fantastic experience. It has a perfect location, the staff are helpful and friendly. The breakfast was the best we had in Italy. It lives up to it's #1 rating on Trip Advisor. We can't wait to go back.

We love Campiello Zen, a 3 bedroom bed and breakfast that's always #1 or 2 on Trip Advisor, yet the rates are reasonable. We stayed for 5 nights last September and are going back again this year. Lovely, helpful owners, great location in a quiet neighborhood seconds away from a vaporetto stop, and an easy (just one bridge) 10 minute walk from the train station. Check their website, they still had rooms for your dates. We've stayed in "Ginko" and the "Nest". Both are great, "Ginko" is a bit larger. Fellow guests showed us the suite, also very, very nice. If you select restaurants ahead of time (Il Zucca is an easy walk away) Andea and Susanna will make reservations for you per your emails, and once you arrive they'll sit down with you and help you plan your days, along with making any other reservations you would like. Highly, highly recommend!
