Questions
1. Based on this itinerary, Will we need Vaporetto passes or just buy as we go?
2. We can’t do everything but are we missing something that is a must see or do?
3. Best place to grab groceries and light bites in the Dorsoduro area?
4. We are foodies but not wanting to do anything fancy on this leg of the trip. We have busy days planned so I want to keep dinner options fairly simple (and we have two amazing balconies at Airbnb so we are good to eat charcuterie, sandwiches or take away eats at home). But I’m open to recommendations on places to eat that don’t require dressing up or making advanced reservations.

Thank y’all so much. I tried to catch spelling errors but Siri is definitely trying to adjust the Italian words!!!

I liked having a vaporetto pass for the convenience.

If you go to Murano, go to Burano, also. (You can catch a ferry to there from Murano, and then back to Venice proper from Burano.) A lot of people prefer Burano, because it is very colourful. I liked both.

A 2:15 pm entry at the Accademia after an 11:25 am arrival at the airport is ambitious. What if your flight is late? Also, a museum on arrival day might send you into a coma being jet lagged. I would recommend staying outdoors that first afternoon,

I thought about a flight delay but my understanding is that tix to the Academy are not too tough to get so we may be able to go online and rebook if we miss it.

Rialto market on Monday won’t work too well. Only fruit and veg, no fish on sale.

How much time have you figured out you will need to get out of the airport to finding a taxi, then from where the taxi drops you at Piazzale Roma, then the walk along to your Airbnb, then walk back to find the restaurant, then walk to find the Accademia?
You may find you will have to reschedule the Accademia visit.
Don’t rush a lovely lunch in Italy! :)

So we will take a water taxi almost to our Airbnb door, which should take about 1/2 hour.
(If we have to skip eating than so be it.)
My understanding is our Airbnb is not far from Academia.
I’m glad this is the only “issue” everyone is seeing!! If we make it, great but if not we will grab alternate tix another time.

Santa Maria della Salute is worth visiting, maybe you can go the same day as San Giorgio Maggiore.

If you walk by Church of Saint Mary of Miracles, go in, it’ll take 10 minutes and it’s very beautiful.

If you’re a Tintoretto fan (Scuola Grande San Rocco), then the Church of Madonna dell'Orto might interest you. It has several Tintorettos.

Try to get inside St. Mark's if you can, it's magnificent. I'm sure the night tour is great, but don't make the basilica compete with your other choices on your final day/evening. I liked the Naval Museum, and maybe you're big fans of boats as I am, but if not it's skippable. I agree that Santa Maria del Salute would be a good choice, especially since it's close to your lodging.

And I would say yes, get a vaporetto pass, it will help you get around and give you a way to rest your feet after much walking. I valued my pass for those reasons, plus twice I got on the vaporetto going the wrong way, which the pass made just an amusing error, but without the pass I'd have been wasting serious money. A single ride is too expensive to take by mistake or just because you're a little tired. The pass frees you.

Individual vaporetto tickets are 9.50 each. The 24-hour pass at 25 euros would be iffy for many people who enjoy walking and are in Venice for only one day (which is a tragedy in itself), but the 48-hour pass at 35 euros is close to a no-brainer, and the 72-hour pass at 45 euros is an even better deal. Just going to Murano will require two trips, naturally. Adding on Burano would make it three. The Grand Canal cruise will be another two trips unless you stay on the boat for the out-and-back trip, and I'm actually not sure you can do that. (Is there a time limit?)

I haven't gotten on a vaporetto going in the wrong direction, but I have walked up to a vaporetto dock, planning to buy a ticket, and found that stop was such a small one there was neither a ticket-vending machine nor a sales booth, so I had to go to a different, larger vaporetto stop (detouring to get to a bridge to cross a side canal, of course). If I'd only been in town for 2 or 3 days, I'd have been upset at myself for making that mistake.

Definitely get a vaporetto pass, individual tickets add up quickly and you can’t purchase tickets at smaller stops. If you are going to head to Murano, then i would also suggest you go all the to Burano first as it’s furthest away. You could also make a quick stop at Torcello (one stop from Burano). You can walk every street on Burano in about 45 minutes, then pop into some lace shops. Murano will take more time if you want to check out a few glass shops and maybe see a demo. All of this will use up a good portion of your afternoon, but you could eat on Murano before returning for your evening tour of the Basilica. I suggest going to Burano first because you may find a long line for the vaporetto on Murano if you get off there first.

All great advice. We will grab Vap passes at the airport.
I’ve added Salute to our tour as well.

We are just down the street from Academia so if plane is on time we should make our 2:15 times entry. Fingers crossed!

Good advice on the order of seeing Burano/Murano.

Groceries: according to Google Map, there is a Crai supermarket on Fondamente Antonio Foscarini, which runs down the east side of the Accademia building (the left side as you face the museum from the foot of the bridge). We never noticed this when we stayed in a nearby apartment for 5 days last March, but it may be new, or it may not exist. Worth a try if your apartment is near the Accademia.

If it does not exist, continue south down the Fondamente to the Zattere (the wide sidewalk along the Giudecca canal) and turn left (heading east). There is a Conrad grocery store a 5- minute walk down that way. Not a “supermarket”,but adequate for most needs. We did much of our shopping there, but a morning visit to the Rialto market for fresh fish was also part of our routine. And we generally bought produce from a small produce stand we passed on our way.

There is another Conrad at the west end of the Zattere ( a nice walk long the water), but I remember it as being very cramped on a previous visit. But that was 20 years ago when it was a Billa, and maybe it has been remodeled or enlarged since then.

In any case, make time to walk beyond the first Conad I mentioned to the western tip of the little Dorsoduro peninsula, known as Punta del Dogana. There is a beautiful view across the water to San Marco and surrounding area.

You may know this, but just in case, simply having the vaporetto pass is not enough. It has to be validated each time you use it before you board the vap. Simply to do. Just do a google search if you have questions about how to do that.

Have you already pre booked a private water taxi from the airport to save time?
A shared one may not go to near your Airbnb.
I don’t have any advice on who to book with.

Thank you for advice on groceries!

I had not planned on booking our water taxi before we get there in case we are delayed. However I will look into it this week. Our travel agent gave us the name of a service so I’ll check in with them. I’m guessing they will have lots of experience with delayed flights. Thanks for that heads up.

Yes, we will get our Vap passes tonight and we know about the validation. But I thank you for the reminder !!!!!
