Venice - Is this hotel too far?

I've spoken with this hotel and they're holding a room for me, but I have a concern that it's going to be a 30 minute walk just to get anywhere:

Everything is so expensive there but we don't want to sacrifice too much convenience to save a buck, also.

BUT... on the other hand, we are arriving by train and departing by plane, and this seems convenient to both of those.

Thanks,
Randy

If this hotel is in Cannaregio it is midway between the train station and San Marco. It's not far from the Rialto bridge. The interesting stuff in Venice is spread around the city, so Cannaregio is central enough. If you find yourself getting tired of walking, just hop on a vaparetto and ride for a while.

One interesting feature of Venice is that I don't think you can walk for 30 minutes without falling into a canal or off the island. And, if the canal is large enough, there's a vaporetto running on it.

I looked at the website and looked at the map. You are some walking distance from the major sites but you are very close to a major vaporetto stop (the main train station). Just get a vaporetto pass for however many days you are there and ride around all you want. The vaporettos (water buses) work just fine. The #1 is the local and stops at every stop. The #82 is more of an express and doesn't stop at every stop. The vaporettos are so frequent, you'll find them very convenient for getting around.

Another of the best features is to actually walk around the neighborhoods and getting "slightly" lost. You find great restaurants that way.

I liked that part of Venice, and the city is very walkable and more compact than you think. The Stada Nova feels less and less touristy the further you get from the Rialto. You are also near two of my favorite meals in Venice: Da Beppi (listed in RS book) - terrific liver and onions, and Alla Vedova (Trattoria Ca d'Oro) on Calle del Pistor, which great cicchetti (order an ombra of wine, then just point at what you want).

Really, as long as you're on the island, it's not too far. Just make sure to stay on the island and not in Mestre.
