Venice: is March the best month?

Planning family trip to Italy in 2021. Dates flexible. Our last trip to Italy was our first, for 12 days. It was glorious except for one detail: because we hadn't visited before, we accidentally hit the last few weeks of the high tourist season in Venice and were shoulder to shoulder with other visitors. We didn't even bother with a gondola ride due to water traffic jams.

This time we're bringing my niece for her first trip. I'm trying to split the difference between freezing weather and floods (January) and mobs of tourists (summer). Would March be a good month to visit?

You can check actual, day-by-day, historical weather statistics over the last 10 years or so on the website timeanddate.com. I'd check at least the last 3 years; 5 would be better.

The hordes don't really descend en masse til later in the spring. We've been there in March before, and while it definitely wasn't crowded, it was cool and damp for most if our stay. I think April might be a nice compromise with better weather, though a bit more crowded.

Timeanddate.com is an excellent resource, thanks. We'll seriously consider April; that's good to know.

We enjoyed Venice in October. Had beautiful sunny weather and fewer tourists (but still plenty around St Marks square). If you like a quieter tourist experience then I can recommend Torcello which is an island close to Burano. It is where the first Roman settlement was and has a great Byzantine cathedral. It’s easy to combine Torcello with Burano as they are on the same ferry route.

I was there 2nd week May 2017 That turned out to be good; the cruise ship daytrippers minimum. Kids are still in school all over the world so no large crowds.
