Venice is a Fish by Tiziano Scarpa?

Does anyone have this book? Can you tell me what it says on page 76 about why there are sloping pieces of marble about two feet above the ground in the corners of the building? Or if you don't have the book but know the answer that will work.

Thank you!

I don't have the book but here's your answer, and some examples of different types (these aren't my photos):

And another explanation: these clever devices may have done double duty!

A more contemporary version in Amsterdam:

Thanks Kathy! This is part of a scavenger hunt, but in order to find the answer one was directed to a book store near San Marco to look at the book and find the answer. Apparently the bookstore is no longer there, so I was going to just leave this out all together - now I'll be able to include it - it will seem scandalous and hilarious to the four teenage girls who will be going on this scavenger hunt. :)

Nigel,
Evidently several - though I have no idea which ones - Kathy's reply to my post has a bunch of great links though.
